Abstract

Intense study of the enigmatic myc proto-oncogene over the last 20 years has broadened our view of its functions and led to insights into transcriptional regulation as well as cancer etiology, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and organismal development. How can one gene be involved in so many aspects of cellular behavior? Of particular interest is the fact that the Myc protein functions as part of a network (comprising Myc, Max, and Mad proteins) whose specific interactions direct transcriptional activation or repression of a large number of target genes. The chapters in this volume examine both molecular and biological aspects of the Myc/Max/Mad network. Included are contributions concerning the regulation of its expression, the mechanisms underlying its diverse transcriptional activities, the structural bases for its critical interactions, and the nature of its target genes. Other chapters explore the evolution of the network, its role in development and genomic instability, and the evidence for a parallel transcriptional network. Overall, this volume provides a broad and current overview of research on a crucial group of transcription factors.

Abstract

China's dismantling of the Mao-era rural commune system and return to individual household farming under Deng Xiaoping has been seen as a successful turn away from a misguided social experiment and a rejection of the disastrous policies that produced widespread famine. In this revisionist study, Joshua Eisenman marshals previously inaccessible data to overturn this narrative, showing that the commune modernized agriculture, increased productivity, and spurred an agricultural green revolution that laid the foundation for China's future rapid growth. Red China's Green Revolution tells the story of the commune's origins, evolution, and downfall, demonstrating its role in China's economic ascendance. After 1970, the commune emerged as a hybrid institution, including both collective and private elements, with a high degree of local control over economic decision but almost no say over political ones. It had an integrated agricultural research and extension system that promoted agricultural modernization and collectively owned local enterprises and small factories that spread rural industrialization. The commune transmitted Mao's collectivist ideology and enforced collective isolation so it could overwork and underpay its households. Eisenman argues that the commune was eliminated not because it was unproductive, but because it was politically undesirable: it was the post-Mao leadership led by Deng Xiaoping-not rural residents-who chose to abandon the commune in order to consolidate their control over China. Based on detailed and systematic national, provincial, and county-level data, as well as interviews with agricultural experts and former commune members, Red China's Green Revolution is a comprehensive historical and social scientific analysis that fundamentally challenges our understanding of recent Chinese economic history.

Abstract

Medicinal Plants of Central Asia: Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan is the first English-language book detailing medicinal plant diversity in the region. More than two hundred of the most important medicinal plants of Central Asia are listed and it includes many whose medicinal uses and activities are being compiled for the first time.  Information on the taxonomy, morphology, ecology, ethnobotany, chemistry, and pharmacology of plants from this region are presented with hundreds of beautiful color photographs. The book is co-authored by scientists from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and the U.S. and draws upon a rich source of local knowledge. The extensive English-Russian linguistic glossary to ecological, botanical, chemical, and medical terms is the first of its kind for this type of book.  Dr. Sasha Eisenman received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University. He is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture at Temple University. His research focuses on chemical and genetic variation in medicinal plants, conservation genetics of rare species, and investigating underutilized plant species. Dr. David Zaurov received his Ph.D. from the Tashkent Agricultural Institute, USSR and since 1992 he has worked in various capacities at Rutgers University, including as a faculty member in the Plant Biology Department. He is the author of nearly 100 research articles and 3 textbooks. In 1998, he was acknowledged as an Honorary Professor of Tashkent State Agrarian University, the Republic of Uzbekistan. Dr. Lena Struwe is an Associate Professor and Director of the Chrysler Herbarium at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, and has over 25 years of research and teaching experience in the fields of botany and medicinal plants.  Her expertise is in the evolution and taxonomy of gentians, anti-malarial plants, and the ways in which humans have used plants throughout history.

Abstract

Depictions of the Holocaust in history, literature, and film became a focus of intense academic debate in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, with the passing of the eyewitness generation and the rise of comparative genocide studies, the Holocaust's privileged place not only in scholarly discourse but across Western society has been called into question. Probing the Ethics of Holocaust Culture is a searching reappraisal of the debates and controversies that have shaped Holocaust studies over a quarter century. This landmark volume brings international scholars of the founding generation of Holocaust studies into conversation with a new generation of historians, artists, and writers who have challenged the limits of representation through their scholarly and cultural practices. Focusing on the public memorial cultures, testimonial narratives, and artifacts of cultural memory and history generated by Holocaust remembrance, the volume examines how Holocaust culture has become institutionalized, globalized, and variously contested. Organized around three interlocking themes-the stakes of narrative, the remediation of the archive, and the politics of exceptionality-the essays in this volume explore the complex ethics surrounding the discourses, artifacts, and institutions of Holocaust remembrance. From contrasting viewpoints and, in particular, from the multiple perspectives of genocide studies, the authors question if and why the Holocaust should remain the ultimate test case for ethics and a unique reference point for how we understand genocide and crimes against humanity.

Abstract

Die wichtigsten Texte zu OMA / Rem Koolhaas The activities of Rem Koolhaas and his staff were widely discussed even before the foundation of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1975. Today, many contributions on the work of OMA can be found in the international architectural press, including Koolhaas' own writings. The book contains about 150 selected texts-interviews, feature articles, essays, lead articles, reviews, letters, introductions, appraisals, and competition reports that have been compiled for the first time. This compilation not only provides a fresh and critical view of the oeuvre of one the most important contemporary architects, but also represents an account of the debate on architectural and urban design in recent decades.
