Research on occasions and forms of private representation in art from the close of Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages has so far been carried out rarely and not very systematically. This volume presents the proceedings of an international conference held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2013. His contributions were devoted to private portraits between Late Antiquity and Byzantium on very different groups of monuments and on aspects in a broad diachronic and methodological perspective.

Trends and Turning Points presents sixteen articles, examining the discursive construction of the late antique and Byzantine world, focusing specifically on the utilisation of trends and turning points to make stuff from the past, whether texts, matter, or action, meaningful. Contributions are divided into four complementary strands, Scholarly Constructions, Literary Trends, Constructing Politics, and Turning Points in Religious Landscapes. Each strand cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries and periodisation, placing historical, archaeological, literary, and architectural concerns in discourse, whilst drawing on examples from the full range of the medieval Roman past. While its individual articles offer numerous important insights, together the volume collectively rethinks fundamental assumptions about how late antique and Byzantine studies has and continues to be discursively constructed.

This volume presents the results of a scholarly meeting which focused on the patronage of women in the Byzantine Empire. In their scope, the articles address broadly not only the founding or re-founding of churches and monasteries, but also their rich decoration, as well as numerous smaller donations. In spite of increased attention to gender research in recent years, a comparative treatment of the legal and economic potentiel that women in Byzantium could exercise in order to exert independent influence has been lacking; thus a gender-specific viewpoint for the volume was intentionally chosen.

"In Procopius on Soldiers and Military Institutions in the Sixth-Century Roman Empire, Conor Whately examines Procopius' coverage of rank-andfile soldiers in his three works, the Wars, Buildings, and Secret History. By evaluating his accounts alongside other comparative evidence, such as the edicts of Anastasius, legislation from the Codex Justinianus, and various papyri, Whately reveals the limitations to Procopius' work, especially when it comes to frontier soldiers. However, this study also shows the impact of Procopius' experiences with institutional matters such as unit structures on his writing, and the particular value he brings to our understanding of recruitment in the sixth century ce"--

This book follows the public life of Michael Palaiologos from his early days and upbringing, through to his assumption of the Byzantine imperial throne in 1258. It explores multiple narratives, highlighting the various public communities in the Byzantine polity, primarily focusing on intellectuals and clerks rather than the emperor himself. Drawing on insights from power relations, studies of class and the public sphere, this book provides an account of thirteenth-century Byzantium that highlights the role of communicative and symbolic actions in the public sphere, and argues they were integral to Palaiologos' political success. Aleksandar Jovanović is Sessional Instructor in History at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, Canada. .
