Abstract

Outstepping the literal bounds of genre, this work has been referred to by scholars as both a tragedy and a comedy. This translation attempts to preserve Euripides' structure of subtlety and his comments on both the futility of war and the distinction between appearance and reality.

Abstract

Return to Troy presents essays by American and European classical scholars on the Director’s Cut of Troy , a Hollywood film inspired by Homer’s Iliad . The book addresses major topics that are important for any twenty-first century representation of ancient Greek myth and literature in the visual media, not only in regard to Troy : the portrayals of gods, heroes, and women; director Wolfgang Petersen’s epic technique; anachronisms and supposed mistakes; the fall of Troy in classical literature and on screen; and the place of the Iliad in modern popular culture. Unique features are an interview with the director, a report on the complex filming process by his personal assistant, and rare photographs taken during the original production of Troy .

Abstract

The Trojan War is the subject of Homer's Iliad, but there have also been 'alternative accounts' handed down since Antiquity. The Latin authors Dictys and Dares claimed to offer eyewitness accounts, asserting that they provided an authentic version of history. Since the Iliad was not read during the Middle Ages due to the poor knowledge of Greek, these two works have taken on a major significance for the reception of the events.

Abstract

Centering on the Greek army's attempt to win the trust of their master bowman Philoctetes, without whom they cannot win the Trojan War, Philoctetes is a morally complex and timelessly relevant meditation on ends and means, on patriotism, and on the relationship between public duty and private interest.

Abstract

Book XXII recounts the climax of the Iliad: the fatal encounter between the main defender of Troy and the greatest warrior of the Greeks, which results in the death of Hector and Achilles' revenge for the death of his friend Patroclus. At the same time it adumbrates Achilles' own death and the fall of Troy. This edition will help students and scholars better appreciate this key part of the epic poem. The introduction summarises central debates in Homeric scholarship, such as the circumstances of composition and the literary interpretation of an oral poem, and offers synoptic discussions of the structure of the Iliad, the role of the narrator, similes and epithets. There is a separate section on language, which provides a compact list of the most frequent Homeric characteristics. The commentary offers up-to-date linguistic guidance, and elucidates narrative techniques, typical elements and central themes.

Abstract

No Western text boasts a life as long as the ""Iliad"", and few can match its energy and glory. This introduction to Homer''s poem sees it as rooted in a particular culture with narrative and thematic conventions that are only partly explained by assumptions about the properties of oral poetry. Professor Mueller follows Plato and Aristotle in seeing the plot of the ""Iliad"" as a distinctly Homeric ''invention'' which shaped Attic tragedy and the concept of dramatic action in Western literature. In this second edition the text has been revised in many places, and a new chapter on Homeric repet
