"This volume offers valuable anthropological insight into urban Africa, covering a range of cities across a continent that has become one of the fastest urbanizing geographic areas of the globe. Consideration is given to the structures, social formations, and rhythms that constitute the definition of an African city, town, or urban space, and to current concepts for thinking about African cities in the twenty-first century. The contributors examine topics including notions of belonging, the effects of globalization, colonialism and transnationalism on African urban life, the cultural dimensions of infrastructure and public resources, mobility, labor issues, spatial organization, language, and popular culture trends, among other themes. The book reflects on how the ethnography of urban Africa fits within anthropology and urban studies, and on new theoretical concepts and methodologies that can be created through anthropological fieldwork in African cities. It will be of particular interest to scholars and students from anthropology, African studies and urban studies, as well as sociology and geography"--

With half of humanity already living in towns and cities and that proportion expected to increase in the coming decades, society - both Western and non-Western - is fast becoming urban and even mega-urban. As such, research in urban settings is evidently timely and of great importance. Anthropology in the City brings together a leading team of anthropologists to address the complex methodological and theoretical challenges posed by field-research in urban settings, clearly identifying the significance of the anthropological paradigm in urban research and its centrality both to mainstream acade

The city is more than demography and architecture, it is a state of mind. Various groups, scenes and subcultures, widely known as "man in the street", shape and are shaped by urban space and its history according to imaginations, nightmares and dreams. Urban anthropologists get immersed in this closely knit fabric of urban culture and conduct field research with all their senses. The reader provides a compact introduction into urban anthropology, which has become the key discipline in exploring cities and city live as sites of encounter, conflict and sensation. It introduces the most influential writers in the field as well as young and upcoming field researchers. With essays by Peter Jackson, Les Back, Ruth Behar, Moritz Ege, Rolf Lindner, Mirko Zardini, Margarethe Kusenbach, Loic Wacquant.

Keeping the Lid on. Urban eruptions and social control since the 19th century is the second CSP volume produced in association with CRIDAF. It is also supported by MIMMOC. We still have something called 'urban studies', as though urban settings were an exception to the rule, worthy of an eccentric's attention and amusing to the general public, when they are, and have been for a long time, in fact, the norm. Thus are they the stage on which most of our culture has been acted in the late modern...

Malaria remains one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. Matian van Soest looks at the malaria epidemic in the peri-urban zones of Uganda's capital Kampala against the backdrop of recent socio-ecological transformations. Based on long-term ethnographic research, the book provides a holistic picture of the malaria epidemic in central Uganda, revealing the highly localized character of an epidemic that once spanned across almost the entire globe. Understanding, and ultimately tackling the disease, requires an appreciation of the social, political, as well as ecological circumstances that frame this epidemic.
