Abstract

"D.W. Winnicott - one of this centuries most important theorists - is the focus of the new edition of this extraordinary volume. Drawing extensively upon Winnicott's own papers and lectures, the main themes of his theory and personal development are revealed. His vast contributions to the understandings of the profound significance of infancy in the total life of human beings is brought to the foreground. And throughout, D.W. Winnicott - noted pediatrician and child analyst, revered teacher and theorist - shines through. Part I, The Background, discusses Winnicott's personal beliefs, and the evolution of his theory of emotional development. In Part II, The Theory of Emotional Development, his main themes are introduced: Basic Assumptions, Early Psychic Functioning, Adapting to Shared Reality, and The Environmental Provision. Part III, Boundary and Space, considers some of the implications of Winnicott's theory of the development for the individual, and for society. Boundary and Space provides for the first systemic presentation of D.W. Winnicott's developmental and clinical methodology. This updated edition also includes a comprehensive bibliography of the works from which the book draws, in addition to an enlightening article that links Winnicott's evolving ideas to various stages of his life. For all professionals and students interested in human development, this volume is an essential invitation into the world of D.W. Winnicott, his words and work."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"Jennifer Sinor has built a creative memoir out of interwoven but episodic vignettes (linked flashes, as she calls them) drawn from a transient childhood dictated by the life of a troubling and troubled military father. Her focus is on traumatic events, which though a number of them seem more than ordinary by many measures, are presented as such by means of precise, luminescent prose that by its very restraint and lack of affect magnifies its impact. In this author's hands, understatement proves an effective method of engaging and holding readers: surprising, or shocking, through sudden reiterations of trauma disrupting quotidian lives, not itself unusual yet always unique in specifics and variable in consequences. This creates tension in anticipation of the next disruption, which is perhaps unexpected in its particulars but now expectable and hence recognizable as ordinary, as it is also recognizable through the knowledge that stumbling into and navigating distress, pain, and shock is normal in living, even if all trauma is not the same in terms of damage or of negotiation by the traumatized"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

The number of people suffering from different eating disorders has grown dramatically within the last twenty years. These two volumes examine feeding difficulties and eating disorders in children and adolescents, from babies to 19-year-olds. The volumes consist of clinical cases that describe the process of psychoanalytic psychotherapy used to treat the patients. The contributors look at the underlying causes for the disorders, such as bulimia and anorexia, lead to a normal life with the help of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In addition, this collection takes into account the profound effects eating disorders have, not only on the patients, but on their immediate family and friends as well.'Many cases describe the anxieties and strategies of defence used against feelings of dependence and the risk of accepting from another. This is a core theme in both volumes and is the principal idea behind the paradoxical title, The Generosity of Acceptance.
