Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Russia first encountered Alaska in 1741 as part of the most ambitious and expensive expedition of the entire eighteenth century. For centuries since, cartographers have struggled to define and develop the enormous region comprising northeastern Asia, the North Pacific, and Alaska. The forces of nature and the follies of human error conspired to make the area incredibly difficult to map. Exploring and Mapping Alaska focuses on this foundational period in Arctic cartography. Russia spurred a golden era of cartographic exploration, while shrouding their efforts in a veil of secrecy. They drew both on old systems developed by early fur traders and new methodologies created in Europe. With Great Britain, France, and Spain following close behind, their expeditions led to an astounding increase in the world's knowledge of North America. Through engrossing descriptions of the explorations and expert navigators, aided by informative illustrations, readers can clearly trace the evolution of the maps of the era, watching as a once-mysterious region came into sharper focus. The result of years of cross-continental research, Exploring and Mapping Alaska is a fascinating study of the trials and triumphs of one of the last great eras of historic mapmaking.

Abstract

From the names of cruise lines and bookstores to an Australian ranch and a nudist camp outside of Atlanta, the word serendipity--that happy blend of wisdom and luck by which something is discovered not quite by accident--is today ubiquitous. This book traces the word's eventful history from its 1754 coinage into the twentieth century--chronicling along the way much of what we now call the natural and social sciences. The book charts where the term went, with whom it resided, and how it fared. We cross oceans and academic specialties and meet those people, both famous and now obscure, who have used and abused serendipity. We encounter a linguistic sage, walk down the illustrious halls of the Harvard Medical School, attend the (serendipitous) birth of penicillin, and meet someone who "manages serendipity" for the U.S. Navy. The story of serendipity is fascinating; that of The Travels and Adventures of Serendipity, equally so. Written in the 1950's by already-eminent sociologist Robert Merton and Elinor Barber, the book--though occasionally and most tantalizingly cited--was intentionally never published. This is all the more curious because it so remarkably anticipated subsequent battles over research and funding--many of which centered on the role of serendipity in science. Finally, shortly after his ninety-first birthday, following Barber's death and preceding his own by but a little, Merton agreed to expand and publish this major work. Beautifully written, the book is permeated by the prodigious intellectual curiosity and generosity that characterized Merton's influential On the Shoulders of Giants. Absolutely entertaining as the history of a word, the book is also tremendously important to all who value the miracle of intellectual discovery. It represents Merton's lifelong protest against that rhetoric of science that defines discovery as anything other than a messy blend of inspiration, perspiration, error, and happy chance--anything other than serendipity.

Abstract

Few Renaissance Venetians saw the New World with their own eyes. As the print capital of early modern Europe, however, Venice developed a unique relationship to the Americas. Venetian editors, mapmakers, translators, writers, and cosmographers represented the New World at times as a place that the city's mariners had discovered before the Spanish, a world linked to Marco Polo's China, or another version of Venice, especially in the case of Tenochtitlan. Elizabeth Horodowich explores these various and distinctive modes of imagining the New World, including Venetian rhetorics of 'firstness', similitude, othering, comparison, and simultaneity generated through forms of textual and visual pastiche that linked the wider world to the Venetian lagoon. These wide-ranging stances allowed Venetians to argue for their different but equivalent participation in the Age of Encounters. Whereas historians have traditionally focused on the Spanish conquest and colonization of the New World, and the Dutch and English mapping of it, they have ignored the wide circulation of Venetian Americana. Horodowich demonstrates how with their printed texts and maps, Venetian newsmongers embraced a fertile tensi

Abstract

"In Imagination and Science in Romanticism, Richard Sha challenges the idea that the imagination could only be applied to the literary and that its primary role was to transcend scientific concerns. Sha shows how the imagination functioned within physics and chemistry in Prometheus Unbound, neurology in Blake's Four Zoas, physiology in Coleridge's Biographia Literaria, and obstetrics and embryology in Frankenstein. Sha also shows how the imagination was used in the scientific community, highlighting as primary examples the work of Davy, Faraday, Priestley, Kant, Mary Somerville, Oersted, Marcet, Swedenborg, Blumenbach, Buffon, Erasmus Darwin, and Von Baer, among others. Both fields profited from thinking about how the imagination could cooperate with reason and how hypotheses that had the possibility of actuality could benefit their work" --

Abstract

This volume contains the papers presented at DS-2007:The Tenth International Conference on Discovery Science held in Sendai, Japan, October 1–4, 2007. The main objective of the Discovery Science (DS) conference series is to p- vide an open forum for intensive discussions and the exchange of new ideas and information among researchers working in the area of automating scienti?c d- covery or working on tools for supporting the human process of discovery in science. It has been a successful arrangement in the past to co-locate the DS conference with the International Conference on Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT). ThiscombinationofALTandDSallowsforacomprehensivetreatmentof the whole range, from theoretical investigations to practical applications. C- tinuing this tradition, DS 2007 was co-located with the 18th ALT conference (ALT 2007). The proceedings of ALT 2007 were published as a twin volume 4754 of the LNCS series. The International Steering Committee of the Discovery Science conference series provided important advice on a number of issues during the planning of Discovery Science 2007. The members of the Steering Committee are Einoshin Suzuki (Kyushu University, Chair), Achim G.
