How did an African-American man born in a ghetto in 1879 rise to such religious prominence that his followers addressed letters to him simply "God, Harlem U.S.A."?Using hitherto unknown materials, Jill Watts portrays the life and career of one of the twentieth century's most intriguing religious leaders, Father Divine. Starting as an itinerant preacher, Father Divine built an unprecedented movement that by the 1930s had attracted followers across the nation and around the world. As his ministry grew, so did the controversy surrounding his enormous wealth, flamboyant style, and committed "angels"—black and white, rich and poor alike. Here for the first time a full account of Father Divine's childhood and early years challenges previous contentions that he was born into a sharecropping family in the deep South. While earlier biographers have concentrated on Father Divine's social and economic programs, Watts focuses on his theology, which gives new meaning to secular activities that often appeared contradictory. Although much has been written about Father Divine, God, Harlem U.S.A. finally provides a balanced and intimate account of his life's work.

The Science of Mind is the revolutionary religious proposal, originally published in the early part of the twentieth century, written by Ernest S. Holmes and based on the teachings of the great philosophers. According to him, God is a perpetual energy source, present throughout the universe. Through prayer, a person can reach God and heal spiritual, mental, and physical wounds. Holmes believed in a philosophy of religion and psychology that emphasized the limitless potential of the human mind. He created the Religious Science movement, a part of the larger, popular New Thought movement. Believing that science, philosophy, and religion could all be connected for the betterment of the individual his work expounds that the universe allows each person to dictate positive and negative feelings in their life and reach a higher level of existence by employing Nature's forces and the power of God. This deluxe edition of this classic work, includes a 21st century study guide filled with practices and exercises that will provide a summary and insights on Holmes' teachings, and provide you with the power to reach a higher level of existence.

This study uncovers the musical foundations and performance suggestions of books of hours, guides to prayer that were the most popular and widespread books of the late Middle Ages.Exploring a variety of musical genres and sections of books of hours with musical implications, this book presents a richly textured sound world gleaned from dozens of extant manuscript sources from fifteenth-century France. It offers the first overview of the musical content of these handbooks to liturgy and devotional prayer, together with cues that show scribal awareness for the articulation of sacred plainchants. Although books of hours lack musical notation, this survey elucidates the full range of musical genres and styles suggested both within and beyond the liturgical offices prescribed in books of hours. Privileging sound and ritual enactment in the experience of the hours, the survey complements studies of visual imagery that have dominated the category. The book’s interdisciplinary approach within a musical context, and beautiful full-color illustrations, will attract not only specialists in musicology, liturgy, and late medieval studies, but also those more broadly interested in the history of the book, memory, performance studies, and art history.
