Examining various social science phenomena and comparative studies fields allows for a holistic approach to understanding rather than trying to achieve understanding as a conglomeration of isolated phenomena This volume aims to build a conceptual infrastructure for comparative research. To do this, the capacity for understanding and identifying the comparative method in various fields is necessary. The volume also builds an interdisciplinary base for continued awareness, development and application of comparative studies. Original chapter manuscripts based on papers from the inaugural session of the International Symposium of Comparative Sciences, held in Sofia, Bulgaria (October 2013) are included. Chapters include case studies, regional survey data, cross-national comparisons and other evidence to analyze the complex combination of drivers and characteristics of comparative sciences in all disciplines and fields. The intent is to have a combination of theory-driven syntheses of current scholarship, reports of new empirical research, and critical discussions of major topics related to the practice and study of comparative science.

Current tensions between the U.S. and Russia are at their highest since the end of the Cold War. In such circumstances, it is imperative to go beyond headlines and rhetoric and take a closer look at the texture of Russian and American societies. Childhood and Education in the United States and Russia provides a rich illustration of the social processes within these countries. Through an extensive interdisciplinary literature review and quantitative analyses of both national and international datasets, this book sheds light on three main areas. Firstly, it explores the extent to which the institution of education intersects with the institution of childhood in Russia and the U.S. Secondly, the author provides an illuminating study of how childhood is stratified by the social background into which a child is born in Russia and the U.S. Finally, this book gives new insight into how we observe the strengthening of children's agency, both in theoretical developments in sociology of education and childhood, and educational practice and parental strategies. By discussing education and childhood from a sociological perspective with a focus on similarities and differences by time and place, this book will prove an invaluable resource for students and researchers in the fields of Sociology of Education, Sociology of Childhood and International Education.

The book proposes an open and collaborative approach to the production of digital teaching contents and to teachers' professional development. Starting from an initial excursus on the undertakings of the Open Educational Resources movement and on the value of collaboration in and among schools, it deals with the topic of teacher training as a back-up to innovation processes, with particular reference to multimedia whiteboards. The theoretical reflection is integrated with the results of the AMELIS biennial project, carried out alongside a network of schools within the Innovascuola (2008-10) framework, and with a presentation of the digital teaching resources produced by the network. Completing the volume, these resources are also available on-line in the form of files and multimedia materials. Conveying the wealth of the experience, they offer teachers and educators useful resources for their teaching activities.

"Donald Trump's election forced academics to confront the inadequacy of promoting social change through the traditional academic work of research, writing, and teaching. Scholars joined crowds of people who flooded the streets to protest the event. The present political moment recalls intellectual forbearers like Antonio Gramsci who, imprisoned during an earlier fascist era, demanded that intellectuals committed to justice "can no longer consist in eloquence ... but in active participation in practical life, as constructor, organizer, 'permanent persuader' and not just a simple orator" (Gramsci, 1971, p. 10). Indeed, in an era of corporate media and "alternative facts," academics committed to justice cannot simply rely on disseminating new knowledge, but must step out of the ivory tower and enter the streets as activists. The Activist Academic serves as a guide for merging activism into academia. Following the journey of two academics, the book offers stories, frameworks and methods for how scholars can marry their academic selves, involved in scholarship, teaching and service, with their activist commitments to justice, while navigating the lived realities of raising families and navigating office politics. This volume invites academics across disciplines to enter into a dialogue about how to take knowledge to the streets."--
