This book serves as a guide to key topics regarding pediatric gender identity to help clinicians better care for transgender and gender diverse youth. Written by experts in the field, it covers critical considerations for child health providers from a variety of disciplines in a range of clinical settings. Patients, families and other community agencies can also find useful information about current practices and recommendations for care and support. The text begins by overviewing terminology, epidemiology, gender identity development, and relevant neurobiology. Next, the text focuses on the emergence of affirmative treatment paradigms using a patient-centered, consent based framework. Topics include psychotherapeutic support, gender-affirming medical and surgical care, management of co-existing psychiatric conditions, sexual health and fertility, legal considerations, international considerations, and more. Pediatric Gender Identity can be used as a framework to address core clinical issues and offers practical considerations for gender-affirming care. Using the growing science and understanding of gender development, this book is an excellent resource for all professionals working with gender diverse youth, including child and adolescent psychiatrists, pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, psychologists, therapists, researchers, school and educational leaders, and students.

Within psychology and psychiatry, gender identity has developed at least two distinguishable meanings: awareness of anatomy and endorsing specific traits that are stereotypical of different gender groups. However, neither existing approach has considered gender identity to be a self-categorization process that exists within personality science. In this book, gender identity is examined as a disorder, along with developmental perspectives and social implications. Some of the topics discussed include gender identity as a personality process; the intersection of gender and sexual identity develop

The birth of a baby with ambiguous genitalia triggers a chain reaction of difficulties that rapidly spread to the entire family and most medical attendants, leading to lasting effects on the gender identity, personality, and sexual functioning of the unfortunate individual. The rapid advances in medicine over the last 50 years have totally changed the outlook for children with disorders of sex development (DSD), but there is still much to learn. This book crystallizes the combined experience of a leading dedicated unit over 25 years in delivering expert medical and surgical care to children with DSD in a holistic environment. It documents the most recent advances in the molecular biology and embryology of sex development, and describes each disorder in detail. The clinical presentation and approach to diagnosis are described both for babies and for children presenting later in childhood or at adolescence. The chapters on management highlight all the latest knowledge and include the shared wisdom of the authors on current controversies, such as the timing of surgical treatment. Finally, the authors describe their short-, medium-, and long-term outcomes, which demonstrate the strengths of holistic team management.

Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography presents an interdisciplinary examination of trans and genderqueer subjects in medieval hagiography. Scholarship has productively combined analysis of medieval literary texts with modern queer theory - yet, too often, questions of gender are explored almost exclusively through a prism of sexuality, rather than gender identity. This volume moves beyond such limitations, foregrounding the richness of hagiography as a genre integrally resistant to limiting binaristic categories, including rigid gender binaries. The collection showcases scholarship by emerging trans and genderqueer authors, as well as the work of established researchers. Working at the vanguard of historical trans studies, these scholars demonstrate the vital and vitally political nature of their work as medievalists. Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography enables the re-creation of a lineage linking modern trans and genderqueer individuals to their medieval ancestors, providing models of queer identity where much scholarship has insisted there were none, and re-establishing the place of non-normative gender in history.

The formation of gender identity is a singularly complex part of an individual's development. When this process is further complicated by conflict between experienced gender and assigned gender or by medical conditions affecting sex development, lifetime consequenses can result. Gender Dysphoria and Disorders of Sex Development offers up-to-date understanding and interventions in one comprehensive volume featuring expert coverage of developmental trajectories, comorbid conditions, current medical and psychological treatments, and an instructive history of professional conceptualizations of gender dysphoria (GD) and disorders of sex development (DSD). Introductory chapters analyze the roles of sex hormones and genetics in brain organization and introduce an integrative biopsychosocial model of gender development. A framework for age-appropriate treatment for children (including guidelines for working with infants), adolescents, and adults is the book's core. And as sex reassignment continues to prove a viable option for some individuals, the latest endocrine-based and surgical interventions for adults are discussed as well. Throughout, this groundbreaking reference work emphasizes empirical knowledge, compassion, a strong ethical base, and coordinated interdisciplinary care. Among the topics covered: Genetic aspects of gender identity development and gender dysphoria Psychosexual development in individuals with disorders of sex development Gender identity diagnoses: history and controversies Early medical intervention in adolescents with gender dysphoria Psychiatric comorbidity in adults with gender identity problems The impact of stigma on transgender identity development and mental health For researchers and clinicians, including psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists, and surgeons working in the field of GD and DSD, Gender Dysphoria and Disorders of Sex Development provides a unique view of the state of the field and recommendations for future research and care.

As a child, he played with trucks and action figures and wanted to be a firefighter. As a youth, he began dressing up in his mother's clothes and becoming sexually aroused. When he started dating, he dreamed of being his girlfriends. "What am I?" he asked his therapist. "A transsexual? A transvestite? Something else?" This vignette describes a man who experiences autogynephilia: a paraphilic disorder in which men who are attracted to women are also erotically aroused by the idea of being women and sometimes want to undergo sex reassignment and live as women. Men Trapped in Men's Bodies explores the phenomenon of autogynephilia, arguing cogently that it accounts for many cases of male-to-female (MtF) transsexualism in Western countries. The book demonstrates that not all MtF transsexuals conform to the familiar stereotype of women trapped in men's bodies: Many resemble—and even describe themselves as—men trapped in men's bodies. Sometimes at odds with conventional wisdom about the interrelationships of sex, gender, and sexuality, the book examines the manifestations and clinical implications of autogynephilia, based on narratives provided by over 300 autogynephilic MtF transsexuals and transgender persons: stories of shame and confusion, courage and self-acceptance. The final chapter examines current and possible future treatment options for autogynephilic gender dysphoric men. Included in this important volume are: • Narratives by autogynephilic transsexuals • Developmental histories of autogynephilic transsexuals • Descriptions of different types of autogynephilia • Autogynephilia's relationship to heterosexuality • Narratives by nontranssexual autogynephiles • Contrasting views of the meaning of autogynephilia For researchers who study gender dysphoria, MtF transsexualism, paraphilias, and related conditions, and for clinicians who treat patients with these conditions, Men Trapped in Men's Bodies provides an essential resource for understanding an underappreciated aspect of MtF transsexualism. For MtF transsexuals and transgender persons, as well as their partners, family members, friends, and associates, the book is a welcome new source of information and validation. .
