Abstract

With many children and adults affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, researchers strive to understand the underpinnings of ADHD and associated factors on both a basic and applied level. The goal of this volume is to explore some of the broad array of research in the field of ADHD. The 12 chapters cover a variety of topics as varied as postural control, endocrine dysfunction, juvenile justice, and academic outcomes. These chapters will provide valuable insights for students reading about ADHD for the first time, researchers wishing to learn about the latest advances, and practitioners seeking new insight in the field.

Abstract

The treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a matter of ongoing research and debate, with considerable data supporting both psychopharmacological and behavioral approaches. Researchers continue to search for new interventions to be used in conjunction with or in place of the more traditional approaches. These interventions run the gamut from social skills training to cognitive behavioral interventions to meditation to neuropsychologically-based techniques. The goal of this volume is to explore the state-of-the-art in considerations in the treatment of ADHD around the world. This broad survey covers issues related to comorbidity that affect the treatment choices that are made, the effects of psychopharmacology, and non-medication treatments, with a special section devoted to the controversial new treatment, neurofeedback. There is something in this volume for everyone interested in the treatment of ADHD, from students examining the topic for the first time to researchers and practitioners looking for inspiration for new research questions or potential interventions.

Abstract

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most controversial and misunderstood medical conditions today. With skyrocketing rates of diagnosis and medication treatment, it has generated a firestorm of controversy. Alarming questions have been raised about ADHD in recent years, including: *Why are one in nine children and adolescents in the U.S. now diagnosed with ADHD, with projected rates still rising? *Why are nearly 70% of those diagnosed with ADHD prescribed medication? *What is causing the fast-rising diagnosis and medication of adults? And why are over a quarter of all

Abstract

The diagnosis and management of ADHD co-occurring with other disorders such as anxiety, depression and personality disorders remain major challenges for clinicians treating all age groups. This book guides clinicians through each step in the diagnosis and management of the comorbidities of adult ADHD on the basis of essential case studies describing psychiatric disorders that frequently occur with ADHD. Each case includes a diagnosis section and management section and is accompanied by questions and answers concerning the most important aspects in diagnosing and managing both ADHD and the comorbid disorders. Drawn from actual clinical encounters, the case studies also feature ample current and valid references.

Abstract

What does it mean to a kid to be labeled attention-deficit disordered (ADD)? Or to have ''hyperactive'' added to the label (ADHD)? What can teachers do to boost the success of students with attention and behavioral difficulties? Are we relying too much on medication for these kids and not enough on new perspectives on learning, child development, the child's socioeconomic and cultural background, biological and psychological research, and the learner's emotional and social needs? Armstrong urges educators and parents to look for the positive characteristics in learners who may carry the ADD/AD

Abstract

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) is a medical diagnostic label for a mixed group of disruptive behaviours in children, which influences their development, family relationships and social interaction. AD/HD is part of a child's make-up: it is not a disease, but a pattern of problem behaviour, much of which is largely outside the sufferer's control. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Multidisciplinary Approach provides clear guidelines on good practice in assessment, diagnosis and management of, and provision for, children with AD/HD. Written for teachers, parents, medical practitioners, psychologists and other professionals, Holowenko's multidisciplinary approach stresses the collaborative nature of successful management of the condition. The book is based on the work of an interdisciplinary group whose aim was to identify a consensus view on the disparate positions on AD/HD.
