Abstract

So many questions surround the key figures in the English literary canon, but most books focus on one aspect of an author's life or work, or limit themselves to a single critical approach. D. H. Lawrence is a comprehensive, user-friendly guide which: * offers basic information on Lawrence's, contexts and works * outlines the major critical issues surrounding his works, from the time they were written to the present * explain the full range of often very different critical views and interpretation * offer guides to further reading in each area discussed. This guidebook has a broad focus but one very clear aim: to equip you with all the knowledge you need to make your own new readings of the work of D. H. Lawrence.

Abstract

When writers go on journeys it is as often to explore the terra incognita of their own selves as to establish the identities of strange lands; in the case of many English novelists between the great wars it was certainly true, as Douglas Veitch remarks in the study I am introducing, that their work, "even as it essayed the exotic, cast an eye homeward and inward", and that they "roamed the world, seeking surcease from a prevailing malaise which doubted the values of Western Civilization." . Mr. Veitch has taken this vital element in the three novels—The Plumed Serpent, The Power and the Glory and Under The Volcano—and has used it not merely to examine these works themselves but also to sketch out the ambivalent role which landscape plays in all fiction, as omnipresent background but also as a rich source of symbols and images reflecting the human drama which a book develops. He has, as he more than once makes clear, done more than read all the relevant literature; he has himself travelled to Mexico in order to see and experience the extraordinary terrain, and, as I can vouch on the basis of my own knowledge of that infinitely attractive and repellent country, he used his senses well while he was there. —from the Introduction by George Woodcock

Abstract

The intellectual scope and cultural impact of British and Irish writers in Europe cannot be assessed without reference to their 'European' fortunes. This collection of essays, prepared by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, record how D.H. Lawrence's work has been received, translated and interpreted in most European countries with remarkable, though greatly varying, success. Among the topics discussed in this volume are questions arising from the personal and frequently controversial nature of much of Lawrence's writings and the various ways in which translators from a

Abstract

This book looks beyond fidelity to emphasize how each adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s short stories functions as a creative response to a text, foregrounding the significance of its fluidity, transtextuality, and genre. The adaptations analysed range from the first to the most recent and draw attention to the fluidity of textual sources, the significance of generic conventions and space in film, the generic potentialities latent within Lawrence’s tales, and the evolving nature of adaptation. By engaging with recent advances in adaptation theory to discuss the evolving critical reception of the author’s work and the role of the reader, this book provides a fresh, forward-looking approach to Lawrence studies.

Abstract

This book presents new readings of D.H. Lawrence’s later novels from the perspective of established critical theory and contemporary thought: a specific critical theory or critical perspective is selected and applied to each novel in order to present particular interpretations of each. Although remaining faithful to one’s personal desires without being unduly concerned with the outside world is considered a Lawrentian virtue, I would like to show another Lawrence who was sensitive enough to the outside world and to the social discourses of his time to employ elements of them in his novels, although subtly, and with critical shifts and displacements. Lawrence is a writer who continually draws lines of flight to escape from capitalist societies that ascribe essential value and power to money.
