Christianity concerns itself with salvation. But salvation implies something from which one must be saved, as reconciliation implies an estrangement and redemption a loss. The classical theological symbol naming the problem to which salvation is the solution is sin. Interpreting the meaning of sin, however, has become difficult for two reasons: sin has become a taboo subject in popular discourse, and has acquired an extremely broad meaning in recent theology. Contrary to a common conviction, original sin is one of the fundamental Patristic issues, because it is the starting point of Patristic anthropology and sets the stage for the need for salvation. The Church Fathers before Augustine did not used the term "original sin", but described its reality, having the greatest possible feeling for the mystical unity of mankind with its first ancestor. This work explores the construction of sin as a religious concept in ancient Israel by examining the dominant metaphors used to express the idea in the Hebrew Bible. Building on insights regarding metaphor derived from recent studies in linguistics and philosophy of language, the book identifies and describes four major patterns of metaphors for sin that permeate the biblical texts: sin viewed as a burden carried by the sinner; sin portrayed as an account kept by God in heaven; sin depicted as a path or direction in which one travels; and sin described as a stain or impurity in need of removal.

When her 1912 story collection, Mrs. Spring Fragrance, was rescued from obscurity in the 1990s, scholars were quick to celebrate Sui Sin Far as a pioneering chronicler of Asian American Chinatowns.
