Abstract

The ‘Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae’ series was launched in 1987 with the publication of Tertullianus, De Idololatria , a critical text with translation and commentary by J.H. Waszink and J.C.M. van Winden (partly based on a manuscript left behind by P.G. van der Nat). It seems appropriate, therefore, that the 100th volume to appear in the ‘Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae’ series should be an updated reprint of J.H. Waszink’s monumental and authoritative edition of Tertullian’s De Anima . This volume contains the complete contents of the first edition, to which we have added a brief overview of J.H. Waszink’s scholarly career, an English translation of the greater part of the introduction to his German translation of De Anima of 1980 and a list of corrections authorized by him.

Abstract

Ennead IV.7 is a very early treatise, where Plotinus presents the teachings of the main schools current in his day: the Stoics, Epicureans, Pythagoreans, and Peripatetics, all of whom presented soul as something material and neither truly immortal nor imperishable. It includes observations on many mainly Stoic doctrines on perception, memory, sensation, thought, virtue, powers of material bodies, mixture and reproduction; on Pythagorean attunement; and on Peripatetic entelechy. In Chapters 9-10 Plotinus presents Plato's doctrines on soul's immortality-mainly that of the individual soul, but a

Abstract

Contemporary culture is soulless. A dead concept to contemporary thinkers, "Soul" has been displaced by philosophical and scientific abstracts. Yet, argues Joseph Grange in this timely and thought-provoking book, without Soul we are left defenseless against the negative constructs of our culture; neither matter nor mind, nor brain, nor consciousness has the power to restore the quickness of our existence. Indeed, without Soul, ethics, particularly honesty, easily turns into its opposites: spin, sophistry, artful deception.Providing a speculative, systematic cosmology based on the methodology developed by Alfred North Whitehead and referencing a variety of philosophers, Western and Eastern, classic and contemporary, Grange offers an understanding of Soul as expression. Grange lays out the basic characteristics of Soul as transformative, social, and conscious power and goes on to discuss the possibility of mystical reason and experience. Actual steps to reconstruct Soul, including meditation, are offered. Spinoza's Ethics, Vipassana meditation, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are shown to have particular resources for soul transformation. This volume concludes Grange's trilogy of cosmologies. Nature: An Environmental Cosmology and The City: An Urban Cosmology discussed the natural environment and the cultural environment. The Soul complements these with an account of the spiritual environment.

Abstract

What would Christianity be like without the soul? While most people would expect the Christian bible to reveal a highly traditional opposition of matter and spirit, the spirit forces of the Old and New Testaments are often surprisingly physical, dynamic, and practical, a matter of energy as much as ethics. The Secret History of the Soul examines the forgotten or suppressed models of body, soul, and human consciousness found in the literature, philosophy and scripture of the ancient and classi...

Abstract

In 1503, Nifo published De intellectu , the major work of his early career, touching on questions of philosophical psychology. Based on a detailed assessment of the views of his predecessors, Nifo in this work presented an analysis of the main issues of Peripatetic noetics, namely origin and immortality of the intellect or rational soul, its relation to the body, its unity and parts, the speculative intellect, and intellectual beatitude. Here the 1554 edition is reproduced. The Introduction is followed by an extensive analytical summary of the contents of the work. The Appendix contains a chronology of Nifo’s life and works, and a full index of the chapters of De intellectu .
