Le corps n'est pas une machine, un bâteau dont l'âme serait le pilote -même si la tradition philosophique l'a souvent pensé dans le cadre de ce dualisme. Et si l'âme -lieu des sensations, des affections, de l'affectivité, des passions et des pensées- n'était qu'un excès du corps? Tout -en particulier l'histoire philosophique du corps- serait alors à repenser autrement, c'est à dire à partir du corps, saisi cette fois du dedans, dans cette intériorité qu'on lui dénie sans cesse, parce qu'elle plonge dans l'abîme.
