Abstract

The book, by exploring diverse tourist practices and presenting a critique of dominant, reductive, ethnocentric theories, shows how tourism is a continually changing set of processes rather than a symbol of particular social characteristics. It looks at the varied ways in which tourist space is produced, represented, regulated and performed. The Taj Mahal is one of the most popular tourist sights in the world, a building which epitomises India, the ultimate icon of splendid extravagance and the world's greatest monument to love. This book presents for the first time an analysis of the narratives which surround the Taj Mahal. By recognising tourist sites as important symbolic locations for the articulation of identities, the author identifies the various stories about the Taj found in travel literature or told by tourists and guides. What emerges is a conflict between the qualities espoused by Western tourists, which the author locates as largely rooted in British colonial knowledge and contemporary and indigenous narratives which contest these ethnocentric dispositions.
