In recent years, policy makers at various levels have discovered the concept of a circular economy and as a result, are increasingly proposing strategies and legal instruments to support the transition from a linear economy towards a more circular economy. This book explores the concept of a circular economy from both a legal and an interdisciplinary perspective. It provides an in-depth analysis of the initiatives taken at EU level and in several EU Member States (including Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Slovenia and the Scandinavian countries), both with regard to movables and immovables and in the various stages of the value chain.

The concepts of metabolism, ecosystems, and circular economy are currently challenging the discipline of urbanism. As the shift from linear to circular production-consumption patterns seems to be ultimate for reducing the externalities of our urban environments and to meet stricter environmental targets, the search for sustainable territorial metabolism has become imperative for our metropolitan areas. The publication 'Designing Territorial Metabolism' questions the European foundation of urbanism in relation to the challenge of territorial metabolism and combines theoretical contributions with cutting edge design proposals for European metropolitan regions. While building with reused components has become one of the most widely noted phenomena in the European architectural discourse in recent years, it is only slowly finding its way into the everyday practice of architects. Whenever components that can last for decades are not destroyed but reused for new buildings, this not only saves resources. It also drastically reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions during the construction phase. Circular construction brings with it a whole range of questions, howeverranging from technical and energy-related to legal ones. This applies even more so today, although the practice itself can look back on a long tradition across history. This book is a comprehensive compendium on the topic of reuse in construction that, in addition to the theoretical discourse, also looks at the various practical questions by using a concrete example: the head-end building K.118 on the Sulzer Areal in Winterthur, which is the largest building in Switzerland built primarily with reused components to date. Since 2018, an interdisciplinary research project has evaluated this pilot project with regard to the architectural-constructive, energy-related, economic, procedural and legal aspects involved in its construction. The texts and graphic materials collected in this book present the findings of this study in a highly informative and visually striking way.

Om aan de Europese klimaatambities tegemoet te komen, heeft België nog maar 28 jaar om volledig klimaatneutraal te worden. Concreet betekent dat zo'n 115 miljoen ton minder CO2-uitstoot. De klok tikt, maar in De klimaatschok tonen Geert Noels en zijn team van Econopolis dat het kan. Samen met een panel van klimaatexperts berekenden zij de impact van twintig realistische klimaatoplossingen: van technologische precisielandbouw over nieuwe vormen van kernenergie tot het hergebruik van industriële restwarmte via warmtenetten. Vooruitgang is niet het probleem, maar net de oplossing.
