Über Jahrhunderte hinweg pflegte die in mehreren west- und zentraleuropäischen Ländern reich begüterte Adelsfamilie Arenberg ein Naheverhältnis zum Haus Habsburg. Der Band untersucht die wechselseitigen Verbindungen dieser hochadeligen Familie mit der Habsburgermonarchie auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen und im internationalen Kontext. Die Adelsfamilie Arenberg besaß zahlreiche Güter in der Eifel, den Niederlanden, insbesondere den südlichen Niederlanden, später auch in Reichsitalien, und der Habsburgermonarchie sowie in Frankreich, Hannover und Preußen. Über Jahrhunderte stand sie in enger Beziehung zum Haus Habsburg. Der Fokus des Bandes richtet sich zum einen auf die Präsenz der Arenberg an den habsburgischen Höfen in Wien und Brüssel sowie im habsburgischen Militärdienst, zum anderen auf ihre Rolle in der Vermittlung habsburgischer Herrschaft vor allem in den Österreichischen Niederlanden. Dabei stellt sich die Frage nach Strategien der Macht- und Statusabsicherung sowie des Aufstiegs einer transterritorialen Familie, die lange in den Grenzregionen mehrerer Großreiche – neben der Habsburgermonarchie auch des Heiligen Römischen Reichs und Frankreichs – angesiedelt war. Darüber hinaus widmen sich einige Beiträge dem Leben und Werdegang von Arenberger Frauen, die in der Familienerinnerung weitgehend der Vergessenheit bzw. Diffamierung anheimfielen.

Emperor Ferdinand II (1619-37) stands out as a crucial figure in the Counter-Reformation in central Europe, a leading player in the Thirty Years War, the most important ruler in the consolidation of the Habsburg monarchy, and the emperor who reinvigorated the office after its decline under his two predecessors. This is the first biography since a long-outdated one written in German in 1978 and the first ever in English. It looks at his reign as territorial ruler of Inner Austria from 1598 until his election as emperor and especially at the influence of his mother, the formidable Archduchess Maria, in order to understand his later policies as emperor. This book focuses on the consistency of his policies, the profound influence of religion throughout his career and follows the contest at court between those who favored consolidation of the Habsburg lands and those who aimed for expansion in the empire.

This study takes a unique approach to the Dutch Revolt (1567-1609) by focusing on the largely untold story of the Habsburg regime and its local supporters in the Low Countries. The author takes a holistic approach and examines a variety of print and non-print 'written, oral, and theatrical' media in order to discover how the regime made use of the different communication channels available. In addition, available sources have been used to document ordinary people's responses to the conflict and the various messages they encountered in the public sphere. The result sheds new light on the Habsburg regime's approach to communication and opinion-forming, while also providing a useful corrective to our understanding of rebel propaganda.
