The fifth volume examines all the works painted by anonymous masters. Most works of the 15th and early 16th centuries are not signed. Several of these works have not proved possible to attribute to a known painter or to a master with a provisional name. These works, labelled as anonymous, have been little studied until now, because they are in general thought to be of lesser quality, and because researchers have prioritised the study of more important masters. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that these reflect the ongoing production of the time in the Southern Netherlands. Beside the fact that these paintings represent the themes that enjoyed a certain popularity at the time, their study opens perspectives onto the socio-economic context and workshop practice. These paintings could be destined for a broad market and betray different working methods allowing for swift execution in several copies. Furthermore, two of these anonymous works, dating from around 1400 or a little bit later, rank amongst the rare representatives of pictorial production in the Southern Netherlands prior to the technical innovations introduced by the Flemish Primitives. This production is by convention called pre-Eyckian painting.

Aan het einde van de achttiende eeuw ontstonden op Belgisch grondgebied de eerste openbare musea. Die openden aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw hun deuren voor het publiek. Zo kon het museumbezoek zich als nieuwe culturele activiteit ontplooien. In dit boek wordt bestudeerd hoe dat proces verliep. Steunend op uitvoerig archiefonderzoek en royaal geïllustreerd met fraai beeldmateriaal biedt dit boek een breed opgezette geschiedenis van het museumbezoek in België in de periode vanaf de onafhankelijkheid tot het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Nys schetst de snelle expansie van het museumwezen, analyseert de ideeën die leefden over het museumbezoek, beschrijft hoe het museumbezoek concreet verliep, tracht het toenmalige museumpubliek een gezicht te geven en staat ook uitvoerig stil bij hoe dat publiek zijn bezoek aan de Belgische musea heeft beleefd. Op die manier krijgt de lezer een origineel portret van het rijke negentiende-eeuwse Belgische museumlandschap.

Bien peu de gens connaissent aujourd'hui le nom de Paul Otlet (1868-1944), ainsi que les mots de Palais Mondial, de Mundaneum ou de Cité Mondiale. Les dictionnaires et les encyclopédies les ignorent, comme si cette fascinante utopie avait disparu sans laisser de traces. L'aventure dura pourtant plus d'un demi-siècle, mobilisant des énergies considérables et suscitant le concours de personnalités prestigieuses. Prolongement des rêves encyclopédiques des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, aux accents parfois grandioses et parfois dérisoires, l'aventure du Belge Paul Otlet touche à l'histoire du livre et des bibliothèques comme à celles des institutions internationales et du mouvement pacifiste. A travers le rôle joué par Hendrik Andersen et Le Corbusier, elle constitue aussi une page importante de l'urbanisme moderne. Mais le projet du Mundaneum apparaît surtout aujourd'hui, à travers certaines intuitions de Paul Odet, comme une préfiguration conceptuelle d'Internet. Dans cette passionnante et première biographie de Paul Otlet, Françoise Levie retrace l'histoire d'une utopie qui aurait pu réussir, d'une grande intuition qui finit par se changer en obsession, d'un rêve de Paix universelle qui bascula dans le délire. L'histoire d'un apparent échec, et d'une victoire posthume pour le moins inattendue...
