Les études de cet ouvrage illustrent l’équilibre toujours changeant que les sociétés démocratiques doivent trouver entre deux logiques sociales opposées : celle qui voit dans l’individu le fondement des valeurs d’autonomie et de pluralisme, et celle qui rappelle que l’individu est toujours le produit d’un milieu sociohistorique particulier et qu’il a des responsabilités comme citoyen. Les termes individu et citoyen renvoient aux deux logiques à l’œuvre dans les sociétés démocratiques. La logique universaliste, d’une part, ne cesse d’approfondir les exigences d’autonomie des sujets et de pluralisme des institutions. La logique particulariste, d’autre part, rappelle que l’individu est toujours le produit d’un milieu sociohistorique particulier et que le processus d’individuation est le résultat même de la constitution de l’État moderne. La tension entre ces deux logiques est au cœur des études de cet ouvrage qui illustrent sur quels équilibres se constitue la synthèse concrète et changeante de la société moderne.
