"The drawings discussed in this book, published in association with the British Museum, were all included in the exhibition, Fra Angelico to Leonardo: Italian Renaissance Drawings, which is taking place in the Round Reading Room at the British Museum from 22 April to 25 July 2010. This is a collaborative project with the Gabinetto Disegno e Stampe degli Uffizi and the same selection of drawings will be shown in Florence in autumn 2010. While making extensive use of these existing studies, many of which are cited in the chapters that follow, in this publication great emphasis is placed on how the results from examination and analysis can go beyond determining simply the materials used but to draw conclusions about the reason and manner of their use and the patterns of use across fifteenth-century Italy"--back cover.

Brill’s Companion to the Reception of Aristotle provides a systematic yet accessible account of the reception of Aristotle’s philosophy in Antiquity. To date, there has been no comprehensive attempt to explain this complex phenomenon. This volume fills this lacuna by offering broad coverage of the subject from Hellenistic times to the sixth century AD. It is laid out chronologically and the 23 articles are divided into three sections: I. The Hellenistic Reception of Aristotle; II. The Post-Hellenistic Engagement with Aristotle; III. Aristotle in Late Antiquity. Topics include Aristotle and the Stoa, Andronicus of Rhodes and the construction of the Aristotelian corpus, the return to Aristotle in the first century BC, and the role of Alexander of Aphrodisias and Porphyry in the transmission of Aristotle's philosophy to Late Antiquity.

"Brill's Companion to the Reception of Sophocles offers a comprehensive account of the influence, reception and appropriation of all extant Sophoclean plays, as well as the fragmentary Satyr play The Trackers, from Antiquity to Modernity, across cultures and civilizations, encompassing multiple perspectives and within a broad range of cultural trends and manifestations: literature, intellectual history, visual arts, music, opera and dance, stage and cinematography. A concerted work by an international team of specialists in the field, the volume is addressed to a wide and multidisciplinary readership of classical reception studies, from experts to non-experts. Contributors engage in a vividly and lively interactive dialogue with the Ancient and the Modern, which, while illuminating aspects of ancient drama and highlighting their ever-lasting relevance, offers a thoughtful and layered guide of the human condition. Contributors are: Simone Beta, Eric Dugdale, Patrick Finglass, Rosanna Lauriola, Enrico Magnelli, Sophie Mills, Elizabeth Scharffenberger, Maria De Fátima Silva and Martina Treu."--

????? Table des matières ????? I. Archéologie de l'anachronisme 1. L'image-matrice. »

Das Kunstwerk als lebendiges Wesen – eine grundlegende Studie Throughout history, and all over the world, viewers have treated works of art as if they are living beings: speaking to them, falling in love with them, kissing or beating them. Although over the past 20 years the catalogue of individual cases of such behavior towards art has increased immensely, there are few attempts at formulating a theoretical account of them, or writing the history of how such responses were considered, defined or understood. That is what this book sets out to do: to reconstruct some crucial chapters in the history of thought about such reflections in Western Europe, and to offer some building blocks towards a theoretical account of such responses, drawing on the work of Aby Warburg and Alfred Gell.
