Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Within the realm of science, the uncertainty principle speaks of the fundamental limits of knowledge and measurement vis-à-vis the external world, and how the very act of seeing alters what is seen. Martin Herbert's The Uncertainty Principle is a collection of essays that reveals layers of unknowing and open-endedness within a diversity of contemporary art practices since the 1970s. If a work of art is always completed by the viewer, as Marcel Duchamp put it, then the works considered here equate completion with construction. In navigating us through a succession of artists' approaches, Herbert also discloses how constructed experiences of “not knowing” can lead to deep engagements with a range of specific issues and themes: from history to politics, from epistemology to mortality.

Abstract

Abstract

This book documents a series of conversations on the art of teaching between cultural theorist Mieke Bal and Jeroen Lutters. In a dialogue that also touches on the role of visual art, Lutters introduced paintings by Banksy, Rembrandt, Marlene Dumas, and George Deem as "teaching objects" and asked Bal to elucidate upon each. The result is a personal, meandering, and precise account of her way of thinking through visual art and literature, as well as how she exchanges ideas with students and colleagues. The text makes clear how objects can speak, how they are thought-images, and serves as a source of inspiration for both students and teachers of the arts and humanities.

Abstract

The lavishly illustrated Regarding Beauty surveys late twentieth-century Western art to address why the timeless notion of beauty has recently been so hotly contested and, in the 1980's and 1990's in particular, so highly politicized.... Regarding Beauty argues that beauty has not disappeared from the dialogue of art and that, on the contrary, it has persisted as an essential element in the evolution of art as the 20th century passes into history.
