This book looks at Aldo Rossi's work through the lens of a term often used to describe Rossi's work: melancholy. While the influence of melancholy on literature and the visual arts has been extensively studied, its presence in architecture has been largely overlooked. Exploring Rossi?s entire career, the book traces out the oscillation between enthusiasm and disenchantment that marks Rossi?s work. Through a close exploration of one of Rossi?s landmark works, the Cemetery of San Cataldo in Modena, the book shows how this brilliant, innovative architect reinterpreted a typology of the past to help us come to terms with representations of death and the deep sadness that inevitably accompanies it.

This crucial reassessment of Aldo Rossi's (1931-1997) architecture simultaneously examines his writings, drawings, and product design, including the coffeepots and clocks he designed for the Italian firm Alessi. The first Italian to receive the Pritzker Prize, Rossi rejected modernism, seeking instead a form of architecture that could transcend the aesthetic legacy of Fascism in postwar Italy. Rossi was a visionary who did not allow contemporary trends to dominate his thinking. His baroque sensibility and poetic approach, found both in his buildings and in important texts like The Architecture of the City, inspired the critic Ada Louise Huxtable to describe him as "a poet who happens to be an architect." Diane Ghirardo explores different categories of structures-monuments, public buildings, cultural institutions, theaters, and cemeteries-drawing significantly on previously unpublished archival materials and always keeping Rossi's own texts in the forefront. By delving into the relationships among Rossi's multifaceted life, his rich body of work, and his own reflections, this book provides a critical new understanding of Rossi's buildings and the place of architecture in postwar Italy.

Edited by Chiara Spangaro, the catalogue raisonné presents for the first time the totality of the products designed and realized by Rossi, from the first pieces of furniture produced in 1960 to 1997. The book collects about 70 objects and industrial and artisanal furniture, illustrated by the drawings, studies, and texts by Rossi, as well as the prototypes and documents relating to the collaboration between the Milanese architect-designer-theorist and the companies working with him. He experimented with forms and colors in works in metal and wood, marble and other stone, ceramics and porcelain, artisanal and industrial fabrics, and plastic materials. With Alessi, Arte, Artemide, Bruno Longoni Atelier d'arredamento, Designtex, Molteni&C, Richard-Ginori, Rosenthal, UniFor, and Up Group, Rossi created iconic furniture and "objects of affection" linked with his architecture, introducing also metaphysical and playful elements, and reflecting on the relationship between the architectural/urban scale and the one of design

"The Urban Fact examines Aldo Rossi's formulation of a theory of the city, developed over the period of roughly ten years, from Architecture of the City published in 1966, to Analogous City exhibited in 1976. Rossi's theory is not taken as an abstract argument, but is seen through his work from that period. A careful selection of twenty-three projects is here presented at face value. These projects, bound by the reality of their setting, but also charged with cultural and civic ambition, illustrate the intricacy of an architectural project as a complex ""whole"". They also demonstrate how architecture could contribute to the changing urban context of the field, hinting at an oeuvre painfully aware of its limitations and stubborn in its intentions."
