Savonarola (1452-1498) saw it as his highest priority to substantiate Christianity's claim to truth, an aspect that has hitherto found scant attention. Although in his youth he had himself been tempted to exchange Catholic Christianity for a neo-Epicurean view of the world, he spent his whole life seeking arguments for the truth of the faith. Following from Aristotelian empiricism and the lines of scientific enquiry, he attempts at an inductive proof for the truth of Christianity with the argument that the observation of Christians' ethical conduct and the causal analysis of these perceptual data allows one to conclude that the faith motivating such behaviour is true.

This volume examines Florentine society at crucial moments of change that are often treated separately in historical narratives: the later years of Medici government under the aegis of Lorenzo the Magnificent, the four tumultuous years of Savonarola’s religious regime from 1494 to 1498, and the unsettled early decades of the sixteenth century. Drawing upon original research conducted during the past decade, it provides important insights into the politics and conflicting ideologies in the city as experienced by different levels of society, not only by the politicians, preachers, and intellectuals whose voices are more familiar to us, but also by women and lower-class citizens. Since no single paradigm is adequate to describe these years of flux, this volume attempts to reassess the period by uncovering the debate underlying nearly all the topics it discusses. In this way, it offers a new and multifocused approach to the study of this important and influential period in Florentine history.

This book presents a study of humanism, theology, and politics in Florence during the last decades of the fifteenth century. It considers the relations between humanists and theologians and between humanism and religion. Modern scholarship on humanism has not taken sufficient account of the deep interest shown by Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494) in theology and religion. This book presents a detailed and innovative account of Ficino’s De Christiana religione (1474) and of Pico’s Apologia (1487), in the context of explaining the evolution of a humanist theology. The book ends with a consideration of the stormy events of the 1490's, when Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) became a leading spiritual and political figure in Florentine public life.
