This book examines the branch of animal husbandry of sheep farming. It focuses on sheep feeding in regions with extensive sheep farming, such as the Sahel region in Africa and Serra da Estrela, Portugal, and describes the form and importance of using natural resources. Chapters cover such topics as sheep feeding and digestion, how to improve carcass yield, and how technologies can help diagnose and study respiratory pathologies in sheep.

This book provides an overview of sheep husbandry in different parts of the world, including information on production and management systems, reproduction, and animal health. Chapters discuss different types of sheep and sheep husbandry in Poland, India, Africa, Spain, and North America, as well as zoonotic diseases such as cryptosporidiosis and their adverse impacts on the economics of sheep herding. This book is a useful resource for producers, veterinarians, animal scientists, researchers, biologists, students, and other interested readers.

This book is intended to be a reference text for veterinarians who provide clinical services to sheep producers. It is directed first and foremost at Australian sheep-raising systems, but the approaches described herein will have wide application in all countries where sheep are raised under extensive grazing conditions. Most of the important conditions of sheep in Australia are relatively straightforward to diagnose, but the establishment of effective and economically sound control strategies is often the most difficult part of health management, particularly for those who are less familiar with sheep production systems. With six initial chapters focusing on providing readers with a basic understanding of the business and science underpinning sheep production, this book focuses its remaining chapters on reproduction and disease conditions, ordered largely on a systems basis. The book provides details about the way disease processes develop and manifest in sheep flocks, with numerous references for those who wish to read further. Australian sheep production is a profitable and fulfilling agricultural pursuit for a large number of farm owners, and this book is intended to assist those who work in the industry to add to the profitability and efficiency of sheep production systems, the quality of sheep products and the welfare of the sheep in those systems.

Soay Sheep synthesises one of the most detailed studies of demography and dynamics in a naturally regulated population of mammals. Unlike most other large mammals, the Soay sheep population of Hirta in the St Kilda archipelago show persistent oscillations, sometimes increasing or declining by more than 60% in a year. Soay Sheep explores the causes of these oscillations and their consequences for selection on genetic and phenotypic variation within the population, drawing on studies over nearly twenty years of the life-histories and reproductive careers of many individuals. Covering population dynamics, demography and their effects on selection, energetic and resource limitations on the interaction between sheep and parasites, and the adaptive significance of their reproductive characteristics, it provides unique insights into the regulation of other herbivore populations and the effects of environmental change on selection and adaptation. It will be essential reading for vertebrate ecologists, demographers, evolutionary biologists and behavioural ecologists.
