In de aanloop naar de verkiezingen van juni 2007 stond de toekomst van kernenergie in België opnieuw maatschappelijk en politiek ter discussie. In dit boek gaan de auteurs op zoek naar de wortels van deze discussie, en volgen ze de evolutie van het nucleaire debat in België van de vroege keuze voor een nucleair programma in de naoorlogse periode tot de recente kiescampagne. Dit boek situeert deze evolutie ten opzichte van belangrijke historische gebeurtenissen of `scharnierpunten' (zoals de impact van het ongeval in Tsjernobyl op het Belgische kernenergiebeleid), en analyseert ze aan de hand van drie parallelle assen die als een rode draad doorheen het boek lopen: de cultuurhistorische achtergrond, de beleidsinitiatieven en de argumentatie van diverse betrokkenen. De auteurs komen hierbij tot de merkwaardige conclusie dat er doorheen de Belgische nucleaire geschiedenis, afgezien van enkele pogingen op de politieke tribune en in het veld, en ondanks de duidelijke keuzes op het gebied van energieopties, nooit een echt gestructureerd maatschappelijk debat is gevoerd. Tenslotte staan de auteurs niet enkel stil bij het verleden maar formuleren ze ook reflecties bij de vormgeving van het toekomstige energiedebat en de rol van kernenergie daarin.
