Recurrence is a significant public health problem. So, this fourth Suvretta meeting, held in February 2006 is intended to concentrate on this problem. Technical nuances of the various operations have been discussed to pursue consensus concerning the best techniques. Methods were explored to improve surgeons' education and look into the multifactorial etiologies to understand the biology of hernia recurrence better.

We are very pleased to provide you with this book dealing with hernia surgery. The chapters in the book are written by surgeons, radiologists, anatomists, and pediatric surgeons from different hospitals in Turkey, the USA, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, China, Hungary, and Croatia. Together with basic surgical principles, the unique local experiences and perspectives are presented. Although it does not cover all the aspects related to the hernia surgery, it is intended for at least two kinds of readers: - Residents of intermediate and advanced courses in medicine; - General surgeons, radiologists, pediatric surgeons, and all doctors, no matter the specialization

Even the best hernia repair can result in postoperative difficulties for the patient caused by repair sequelae as for example pain, infertility, infection, adhesion and dislocation of the protheses. That can happen many years later and now, where the general principle of hernia repair is well understood all over the world, these sequelae are noticed more and more. To define them, to evaluate the absolute and relative risk of these sequelaes and to describe the ways of their prevention, diagnosis and treatment, the 5th Suvretta meeting had focussed on this subject. We discussed if there’s a principle risk by technique, material or both. The results of these discussions and the future handling and evaluation of this problem was the aim of this meeting. Even the best method can be made better by optimization of its single components. Even the best hernia repair can result in postoperative difficulties for the patient caused by repair sequelae such as pain, infertility, infection, adhesion and dislocation of the prostheses. This can happen many years later, and now that the general principle of hernia repair is broadly understood all over the world, these sequelae are being noticed more and more. The 5th Suvretta meeting was held in order to define these sequelae, to evaluate the absolute and relative risks they pose, and to discuss the methods of their prevention, diagnosis and treatment. We discussed whether the principal risk was related to technique, material or both. This book is distinctive in that it focuses exclusively on current laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques for inguinal, primary and incisional abdominal wall, and hiatal hernias. Individual steps in diagnosis and treatment are described by experts in the field, but this clinical expertise is also integrated with the best available external evidence from systematic research as encapsulated in statements, recommendations, and guidelines. The reader will thus not only learn how to perform techniques systematically and reproducibly but also come to understand which of the procedures have been scientifically validated by studies, reviews, and meta-analyses and which have simply developed empirically. The descriptions of technique are supplemented by detailed guidance on such aspects as indications, anesthesia, aftercare and pain management, and the prevention and management of complications. Where appropriate, careful comparisons are made of competing repair options, including open techniques. In summary, this book will help practicing surgeons to standardize their operative technique so as to reflect current scientific knowledge and thereby improve the quality of laparoscopic/endoscopic hernia surgery.

This book provides comprehensive advice and recommendations to surgeons practicing the laparoscopic repair of incisional hernias. It opens with a brief history and evolution of the technology surrounding the repair of incisional and ventral hernias laparoscopically and includes the introduction of robotic technology, which is constantly undergoing further refinement as new devices are introduced. The text discusses areas of controversy, as well as the limits and benefits of using this technology in the laparoscopic approach. Written by the current thought leaders of minimally invasive techniques, this helpful resource provides current opinions and methods in incisional and ventral hernia repair. Laparoscopic And Robotic Incisional Hernia Repair: Current Considerations provides a valuable resource for both seasoned laparoscopic surgeons interested in the technical aspects of incisional and ventral hernia repair.
