Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches for Suicidal Adolescents: Translating Science Into Practice combines state-of-the-art research and treatment development with clinical descriptions of evidence-based and evidence-informed treatment strategies for adolescents struggling with suicidality and self-harm. The book provides important information on clinical approaches that have shown promise in reducing the risk of suicide attempts and self-harm in teens and preventing the tragedy of premature death by suicide. Following two chapters on risk assessment and safety planning, six chapters present different approaches to psychosocial treatment. Although some approaches share common theoretical roots, and most address similar targets and mechanisms (e.g., restricting access to lethal means of self-harm, enhancing family support and functioning, and strengthening emotion regulation), each treatment modality has important differences and distinct strengths. The book's final chapter addresses pharmacological strategies for managing and treating suicidality. This combination of information on risk assessment and management, safety planning, psychosocial treatment, and pharmacologic treatment reflects the perspective that psychosocial and biologically based risk and protective factors are increasingly recognized as crucial for improving the mental health of and outcomes for adolescents and their families. The volume's many useful features include the following: The book is user-friendly. Each treatment chapter follows a common structure: overview, theoretical model, review of current empirical evidence, primary treatment components and intervention strategies, case example, recommendations for implementing the approach in practice, resources for obtaining training, and suggested readings. Readers can easily find relevant information and compare treatment approaches. The book is practice friendly. By offering a review of existing evidence-based treatments for at-risk adolescents in one accessible volume, the book makes it easier for clinicians to learn about current findings in the field and to choose between existing approaches. Moreover, the clinically rich chapters contain case examples and suggestions for implementing each treatment into practice across a range of settings. The book is pragmatic. Recognizing that clinicians attempting to implement these promising treatments in community practice with limited resources may encounter challenges, the authors include a table at the end of each treatment chapter describing elements that may more easily be put into practice when implementation of the full treatment protocol is not feasible. The book emphasizes risk assessment and safety. Risk and protective factors are explored in-depth, as are strategies for enhancing safety. These strategies are relatively straightforward, but they have the enormous potential to save lives. An indispensable resource not only for clinicians working across diverse practice settings, Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches for Suicidal Adolescents: Translating Science Into Practice will also prove valuable to policy makers, health and behavioral health system leaders, and researchers engaged in the critically important work of reducing suicide among adolescents.

"Safe Passage: A Guide to Addressing School Violence provides a road map for understanding and addressing violence of all kinds in the school environment. The editors emphasize that mass casualty events are but one species of violence, and that in fact school violence comes in many different forms, from bullying on campus to trauma off campus, from community gangs to violent crimes. Case vignettes illustrate and illuminate the range of violent situations likely to be encountered, as well as the advantages and disadvantages inherent in various interventions. The authors stress that threat assessment must take individual, school, and community variables into account. Safe Passage: A Guide to Addressing School Violence introduces readers to important concepts pertaining to school violence and serves as a practical guide for mitigating and preventing violence in our schools"--

"Adolescents are more likely than any other age groups to engage in behaviors that contribute to injuries, violence, unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and reckless alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. At-risk adolescents may also exhibit signs of moodiness, aggression, and even self-injury, and these behaviors often cause parents, teachers, and clinicians to become extremely frustrated. Adolescents themselves may even believe that change is impossible. Drawing on proven-effective dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy for At-Risk Adolescents is the first reader-friendly and easily accessible DBT book specifically targeted to mental health professionals treating adolescents who may be dangerous to themselves or others. If you work with adolescents who exhibit at-risk behavior, you know how important it is to take immediate action. However, you may also have trouble "breaking through" the barrier that these young people can build around themselves. This book can help. The DBT skills outlined in this book are evidence-based, and have been clinically proven to help build emotion regulation skills, which are useful for all age groups, though perhaps especially for the millions of at-risk adolescents experiencing depression, anxiety, anger, and the myriad behaviors that can result from these emotions. This book also includes practical handouts and exercises that can be used in individual therapy sessions, skills training groups, school settings, and when working with parents and caregivers. Adolescents stand at the precipice of the future, and the decisions they make now can have life-long impacts. By showing them how to manage their emotions and deal with the stresses that are common in day-to-day life, you are arming them with the tools they will need to succeed and thrive"--

Psychiatric disorders in adolescents are an important social problem which is relevant to almost all healthcare professionals. According to the results of The National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement (NCS-A), the lifetime prevalence of anxiety, behavior, mood, and substance use disorders among adolescents was 31.9%, 19.1%, 14.3%, and 11.4%, respectively. Approximately 40% of participants in this survey with one class of disorder also met criteria for another class of lifetime disorder. Comorbidity is increasingly recognized as a key feature of mental disorders among adolescents. Female adolescents are more likely than males to have mood and anxiety disorders, but less likely to have behavioral and substance use disorders. Regretfully, medical professionals are not sufficiently trained about adolescent psychiatric disorders. For example, primary care providers correctly identify less than a fourth of youth with a depressive or anxiety disorder. Also, many clinicians underestimate the importance of the problem of adolescent psychiatric illnesses and suicidal behavior. Lack of skilled medical providers impedes the delivery of needed services to adolescents with mental health issues. This coupled with a lag in the ability of primary health care services to incorporate psychiatric interventions, and a failure of public health initiatives to pay attention to adolescent mental health problems has led to continuing gaps in care over decades despite the public pronouncements of needs. In this book you will find relevant information for health professionals, since we believe that the mental health of adolescents is essential for sustaining healthy and productive societies.
