Abstract

Paradise from behind the Iron Curtain provides a detailed survey of the key responses to Milton's work in Hungarian state socialism. The four decades between 1948 and 1989 saw a radical revision of previous critical and artistic positions and resulted in the emergence of some characteristically Eastern European responses to Milton's works. Critical and artistic appraisals of Milton's works in the communist era proved more controversial than receptions of other major Western authors: on the one hand, Milton's participation in the Civil War earned him the title of a 'revolutionary hero,' on the other hand, religious aspects of his works were often disregarded and sometimes proactively suppressed. Ranging through all the genres of Milton's oeuvre as well as the critical tradition, the book highlights these diverging responses and places them in the wider context of socialist cultural policy. In addition, the author presents the full Hungarian script of the 1970 theatrical performance of Milton's Paradise Lost, the first of its kind since the work's publication, including a parallel English translation, which enables a deeper reflection on Milton's original theodicy and its possible interpretations in communist Hungary.

Abstract

What is art? What is it to understand a work of art? What is the value of art? Robert Stecker seeks to answer these central questions of aesthetics by placing them within the context of an ongoing debate criticizing, but also explaining what can be learned from, alternative views. His unified philosophy of art, defined in terms of its evolving functions, is used to explain and to justify current interpretive practices and to motivate an investigation of artistic value.Stecker defines art (roughly) as an item that is an artwork at time t if and only if it is in one of the central art forms at t and is intended to fulfill a function art has at t, or it is an artifact that achieves excellence in fulfilling such a function. Further, he sees the standard of acceptability for interpretations of artworks to be relative to their aim. Finally, he tries to understand the value of artworks through an analysis of literature and the identification of the most important functions of literary works. In addition to offering original answers to major questions of aesthetics, Artworks covers most of the major issues in contemporary analytic aesthetics and discusses many major, as well as many minor, figures who have written about these issues, including Stanley Fish, Joseph Margolis, Richard Rorty, and Richard Shusterman.

Abstract

Abstract

This text examines the poetry of Hart Crane and his circle within transnational modernist periodical culture. It reappraises Crane's poetry and reception and introduces several lost works by the poet, including critical prose, reviews and 'Nopal', a poem written in Mexico. Through its exploration of Crane's close engagement with periodical culture, it provides a rich and detailed panorama of twentieth-century literary and artistic communities. In particular, this monograph offers a vivid portrait of forgotten periodicals and their artistic communities, examines the periodical contexts in which modernist poetry fused material and aesthetic experimentation and explores Crane's important and neglected influence on modern and contemporary poetry.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

“An engaging collection of voices commemorate the first two centuries of Austen’s reception in this volume. These essays share a commitment to level academic and public discourse on Austen and to embrace Austen’s multimedia legacy.” – Inger S. B. Brody, Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA Austen After 200 explores our contemporary relationship with Jane Austen in the wake of the bicentenaries of her death and the first publication of her novels. The volume begins by looking at Austen’s popular appeal and at how she is consumed today in diverse cultural venues such the digisphere, blogosphere, festivals and book clubs. It then offers new approaches to the novels within various critical contexts, including adaptation studies, fan fiction, intertextuality, and more. Collecting these new essays in one volume enables a unique view of the crossovers and divergences in engagements with Austen in different settings, and will help a comparative approach between the popular and the academic to emerge more fully in Austen studies. The book gathers insights from a range of contributors invested in new reading spaces in order to show the creative ways in which we are all adapting as we continue to read Austen’s works. Kerry Sinanan is Assistant Professor of Transatlantic Eighteenth and Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA. She has published on Jane Austen and Barbara Pym, and many articles on Black Atlantic texts, including The Woman of Colour (1808). Annika Bautz is Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of Plymouth, UK. Her publications include books and essays on Jane Austen, Walter Scott and Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and on the history of the book in the Romantic and Victorian periods. Daniel Cook is Reader in English at the University of Dundee, UK. He is the author of Thomas Chatterton and Neglected Genius, 1760-1830 (2013), Reading Swift's Poetry (2020), and Walter Scott and Short Fiction (2021).
