Abstract

Abstract

For decades, top scientists in colleges and universities pursued a clear path to success: enroll in a prestigious graduate program, conduct research, publish papers, complete the PhD, pursue postdoctoral work. With perseverance and a bit of luck, a tenure-track professorship awaited at the end. In today’s academic job market, this scenario represents the exception. As the number of newly conferred science PhDs keeps rising, the number of tenured professorships remains stubbornly stagnant. Only 14 percent of those with PhDs in science occupy tenure-track positions five years after completing their degree. Next Gen PhD provides a frank and up-to-date assessment of the current career landscape facing science PhDs. Nonfaculty careers once considered Plan B are now preferred by the majority of degree holders, says Melanie Sinche. An upper-level science degree is a prized asset in the eyes of many employers, and a majority of science PhDs build rewarding careers both inside and outside the university. A certified career counselor with extensive experience working with graduate students and postdocs, Sinche offers step-by-step guidance through the career development process: identifying personal strengths and interests, building work experience and effective networks, assembling job applications, and learning tactics for interviewing and negotiating—all the essentials for making a successful career transition. Sinche profiles science PhDs across a wide range of disciplines who share proven strategies for landing the right occupation. Current graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, mentors, and students considering doctoral and postdoctoral training in the sciences will find Next Gen PhD an empowering resource.

Abstract

This 6-volume Handbook covers in detail all of the latest practice in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). Edited by two world-leading authorities on the subject, contributions have come from more than 200 international authors, making this a totally comprehensive text on the subject. The Handbook’s aim is to review the developments that have occurred in TVET and provide pointers to improvements in the field. In this Handbook readers will find information on TVET models from all over the world, reflections on the best and most innovative practice, and dozens of telling case studies. The Handbook presents the work both of established as well as the most promising young researchers, giving it a real cutting edge and features unrivalled coverage of developments in research, policy and practice in TVET. It will assist those involved in TVET at any level in making informed decisions and further advance and improve the field and to bridge the gap between vocational and academic education in the 21st century. This Springer work is particularly relevant today as TVET faces major challenges posed by the move in many countries towards the knowledge-based economy ushered in by new information and communication technologies. Traditional occupations and apprenticeships are affected as the boundaries between manual and mental work fade. National economies are evolving rapidly as market forces take full advantage of the opportunities offered by globalization. Work, of course, has always been a major feature in people’s lives. Not only does it provide them with the means of survival—food, clothing and shelter—but it also has a major impact on their self-identity, social status, standard of living and quality of life. In this respect, the shift from the Industrial Age to the Information Age has considerable implications for education and training. Numerous questions arise from the shift in the global labour marketplace, questions that this volume provides answers to. How do we anticipate change in the labour market? How respond to the dilemma of providing appropriate educational and training courses in a fluid world economy? Governments need reliable mechanisms to predict economic trends and the demand for manpower. Governments, enterprises and trade unions alike must focus on the methodologies of teacher training, curriculum development, the school-to-work transition, gender, and equality and equity. They will need to offer flexible pathways to training, find new ways of moulding human capital, and work out how they cope with unemployment and an ageing workforce—to name only a few. These are just some of the topics addressed in this Handbook. It draws on international experience to identify the best answers and the best procedures to improve TVET, and provides comprehensive coverage of cutting-edge practices in research and policy as we face the vicissitudes of the twenty-first century.

Abstract

This book examines learning taking place on the interface between education and working life at three levels: the individual learning processes; the organisational learning processes in educational institutions and work organisations; and the education system. Theoretical concepts uniting these different fields of learning are connectivity and transformation. Here, connectivity refers to processes that contribute to close relationships and connection between different elements of learning situations, contexts of learning and systems to promote learning. Transformation refers to the changes and developmental processes to be achieved through connecting different elements of learning. The book provides a comprehensive review of the integration of work and learning, which is a central issue in current discussion on the development of vocational and professional expertise. The contributors represent a broad range of experience and the articles are based on recent, extensive empirical studies.

Abstract

High priority is now given to training and education in all industrial countries to meet the demands of the 'new knowledge economy'. This book analyses the policies and provision of vocational education in advanced industrial countries (UK, USA, Japan, Sweden, etc.) against the backdrop of changing labour markets. In doing so it challenges widely held assumptions about skills and employment growth, and explores the roles that government and the private sector couldplay in developing advanced skills policies and initiatives.

Abstract

Is the current industrial model of schooling capable of preparing young people for modern working life? This book provides an unsettling picture of the challenges young people face following the uncertainty of the Global Financial Crisis. It asks whether teachers and schooling are able to provide the skills needed in a contemporary global economy.
