Known as the "Spanish Homer," Luis de Góngora y Argote (1561-1627) is widely considered to be Spain's greatest poet. He was both praised and vilified during his lifetime, but his reputation waned in the years after his death; in the 1920's, he was championed by the Modernists, including Federico García Lorca, and influential critics of Spanish literature, including Dámaso Alonso. Famous for intricate metaphors in baroque style and syntax, Góngora has even been immortalized as a literary term: a "gongorism" connotes an involved Latinate style. Yet despite his influence and reputation

"Explores the theme of jealousy in early modern Spanish literature through the works of Lope de Vega, Cervantes, and Gongora. Using the philosophical frameworks of Vives, Descartes, Freud, and DeSousa, Wagschal proposes that the theme of jealousy offered a means for working through political and cultural problems involving power"--Provided by publisher.

During the Golden Age, poetry and drama entered into a dynamic intertextual and intergeneric exchange. The Comedia appropriated the different poetic currents prevalent during the Renaissance and also often enacted the controversies surrounding poetic language. Of particular interest is the influence of gongorismo on the comedia. Luis de Góngora himself experimented with dramatic form in his two little-known plays, Las firmezas de Isabela and El doctor Carlino. In his quest for effective dramatic language, Lope de Vega dramatized Gongorine language through both parody and respectful
