Die Arbeit zeigt auf, in welchem Maße die Hermeneutik des jungen Goethe von der Auseinandersetzung mit bibelexegetischen Fragen geprägt ist. Insbesondere der Pietismus bietet Goethe verstehenstheoretische Paradigmen an, auf die er in spielerischer Weise bei der Entfaltung seiner Genievorstellung zurückgreift. Der "Wiedergeborene in Christo", dem gnadenhaft Verstehen zuteil wurde und dessen Verzückung sich in normvergessener Zungenrede Bahn bricht, wird zur Schablone, nach der das Verhältnis von Eindruck und Ausdruck, Hermeneutik und Produktionsästhetik, gezeichnet wird. Dieses Umschlagen einer geistgewirkten, pneumatischen Hermeneutik in eine neue, genialische Produktionsästhetik wird von Goethe in der Auseinandersetzung mit theologischen und insbesondere bibelexegetischen Fragen in den Texten Brief des Pastors und Zwo wichtige bisher unerörterte biblische Fragen entworfen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird u. a. deutlich, wie sehr der Aufsatz Von Deutscher Baukunst als produktionsästhetisches Manifest durch eine spezifische Verstehenstheorie bedingt ist, die ihre Prägung durch die pietistische Hermeneutik nicht verhehlen kann.

"In this incisive, original book, S. Williams reads prefaces to German literature and philosophy around 1800 as pretexts for writing, examining three of the most remarkable preface-writers of that era--Goethe, Jean Paul, and Hegel--in the contexts not only of German, but also European print culture, thought, and literature"-- "Around 1800, print culture became a particularly rich source for metaphors about thinking as well as writing, nowhere more so than in the German tradition of Dichter und Denker. Goethe, Jean Paul, and Hegel (among many others) used the preface in order to reflect on the problems of writing itself, and its interpretation. If Sterne teaches us that a material book enables mind games as much as it gives expression to them, the Germans made these games more theoretical still. Weaving in authors from Antiquity to Agamben, Williams shows how European-and, above all, German-Romanticism was a watershed in the history of the preface. The playful, paradoxical strategies that Romantic writers invented are later played out in continental philosophy, and in post-Structuralist literature. In this ambitious book, Kirk Wetters traces the genealogy of the demonic in German literature from its imbrications in Goethe to its varying legacies in the work of essential authors, both canonical and less well known, such as Gundolf, Spengler, Benjamin, Lukács, and Doderer. Wetters focuses especially on the philological and metaphorological resonances of the demonic from its core formations through its appropriations in the tumultuous twentieth century. Propelled by equal parts theoretical and historical acumen, Wetters explores the ways in which the question of the demonic has been employed to multiple theoretical, literary, and historico-political ends. He thereby produces an intellectual history that will be consequential both to scholars of German literature and to comparatists.
