Cet essai se veut une chronique de l'évolution sociale du Québec, de 1945 à 1965, et un survol des transformations politiques qui suivirent, entre 1965 et 1995, année du dernier référendum sur la souveraineté du Québec. Un tel essai comporte deux embûches, que l'auteur relève dès le départ. Il expose ensuite quelques éléments de l'histoire des Canadiens français et des Québécois, pour bien faire comprendre que notre histoire n'est pas une, mais deux: celle des Canadiens anglais et celle des Canadiens français, aujourd'hui Québécois. Cette double histoire s'appuie sur des légendes, dont l'auteur fait état sommairement en insistant sur l'interprétation qui glorifie la conquête anglaise et l'épisode de la création de la Confédération par les deux peuples fondateurs. Il poursuit en commentant le passage de la tradition à la modernité et décrit les péripéties et les conséquences de la Révolution tranquille qui a amené la transformation d'une société traditionnelle en une société moderne. Il termine avec certains commentaires d'humeur sur la situation politique actuelle, une humeur arrimée sur la ténacité des légendes fondant l'éternelle double interprétation et double légitimation de la lutte entre l'unité canadienne et l'existence du peuple québécois. The volume, created by the collaboration between the University of Florence and the University of Lisbon, aims to celebrate the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, a year after his death in january 2022.
