Abstract

Bildung ist mehr als "Wissen" im Sinne von Know that. Mit Hilfe der Erkenntnismöglichkeiten der historisch arbeitenden Geisteswissenschaften wird in diesem Buch der Zusammenhang zwischen verschiedenen Regulierungskräften und früheren Ausformungen des Bildungsbegriffs vor Augen geführt. Die gewonnenen Einsichten werden auf zwei aktuelle Problemkreise bezogen: Bildung und Gesellschaft sowie Bildung und Bildungssystem. Education signifies more than "knowledge" in the sense of knowing facts. Using epistemic resources from the history and the humanities, this book reveals the connections between various regulatory regimes and past formulations of the concept of education. The insights it offers focus on two current problem areas: education and society, and education and the educational system.

Un double intérêt pour les rapports musique/littérature et pour le concept de Bildung a déterminé la comparaison, dans le cadre de cet ouvrage, de dix romans de formation de langues française et allemande qui se répartissent symétriquement du milieu du XIXème siècle à nos jours: "Der arme Spielmann" de Franz Grillparzer et "Consuelo" de George Sand; "Gertrud" de Hermann Hesse et "Jean-Christophe" de Romain Rolland; "Doktor Faustus" de Thomas Mann et "La Pêche miraculeuse" de Guy de Pourtalès; "Der Untergeher" de Thomas Bernhard, "Porporino" de Dominique Fernandez, "Die Klavierspielerin" de Elfriede Jelinek et "Tous les matins du monde" de Pascal Quignard. Cette étude de synthèse tend à dégager, au regard d'oeuvres qui présentent une réelle densité 'musico-littéraire', l'évolution et la spécificité du 'roman de la formation musicale', catégorie littéraire qui est définie par référence aux notions allemandes de Bildungsroman et de Künstlerroman. La culture musicale de romanciers - dont la formation en ce domaine a servi pour certains de propédeutique à l'écriture - est en effet l'objet d'une transposition littéraire qui confronte le lecteur à la problématique fondamentale des rapports de la musique et du langage. La revendication du statut d''écrivain-musicien', à laquelle s'ajoute l'intertextualité particulière que crée dans ces romans le jeu des références et des citations musicales, invitent à réfléchir notamment au rapprochement analogique des structures musicales et des structures littéraires.

By examining the works of George Eliot, Carlyle, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, George Meredith, George Gissing, Joseph Conrad, E.M. Forster, and D.H. Lawrence, as well as several post-World War II novels, Argyle explores the Goethean ideal of Bildung and the Bildungsroman (self-culture and the apprenticeship novel), Heinrich Heine's anti-philistinism, music, the Tübingen higher criticism, Schopenhauer's and Nietzsche's philosophies, Prussianism, and avant-garde culture in the Weimar Republic. To establish the status of these allusions in the public conversation, Argyle moves between literary and extra-literary contexts, including biographical material about the authors as well as information from contemporary literary works, periodical articles, and other documentation that indicates the understanding authors could assume from their readers. Her methodology combines theories of allusion and intertextuality with reception theory.

Wie lässt sich der Bildungsroman als Gattung fassen, ohne entweder seine Entstehung oder seine vielfältigen Wandlungen zu marginalisieren? Im vorliegenden Band können die in der Gattung verhandelten Relationen von Individuum, Gesellschaft, Bildung und Kunst bzw. Literatur mit einem feldtheoretisch modellierten Gattungsverständnis sowohl diachron als auch synchron verortet und analysiert werden. Gattungsgenese und -wandel werden dabei nicht einsträngig-linear entwickelt, sondern durch neun exemplarische Aufsätze spezifisch perspektiviert. Dabei werden die beteiligten Akteure und die der Gattung jeweils zugesprochene Wertigkeit systematisch verbunden, indem Publikation und Rezeption als strategische Positionierungen verstanden werden. Die Bildungsromane des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts lassen sich dabei im gleichen Maße als aktiver Anschluss an eine Traditionslinie verstehen, wie sie auch Verschiebungen deutlich sichtbar machen.Der Band ist für all diejenigen von Interesse, die sich für einen neuen sozialgeschichtlich-hermeneutischen Zugang zur Gattung des Bildungsroman interessieren und kanonische sowie bisher weniger bekannte Werke im Gattungszusammenhang kennenlernen wollen.

Although some of the most distinguished German novels written since about 1770 are generally considered to be Bildungsromane, the term Bildungsroman is all too frequently used in English without an awareness of the tradition from which it arose. Professor Swales concentrates on the roles of plot, characterization, and narrative commentary in novels by Wieland, Goethe, Stifter, Keller, Mann, and Hesse. By pointing out that the goal in each work is both elusive and problematic, he suggests a previously unsuspected ironic intent.
