Abstract

Recent increasing trends of the occurrence of natural and anthropic processes have a strong impact on landscape modification, and there is a growing need for the implementation of effective instruments, tools, and approaches to understand and manage landscape changes. A great improvement in the availability of high-resolution DEMs, GIS tools, and algorithms of automatic extraction of landform features and change detections has favored an increase in the analysis of landscape changes, which became an essential instrument for the quantitative evaluation of landscape changes in many research fields. One of the most effective ways of investigating natural landscape changes is the geomorphological one, which benefits from recent advances in the development of digital elevation model (DEM) comparison software and algorithms, image change detection, and landscape evolution models. This Special Issue collects six papers concerning the application of traditional and innovative multidisciplinary methods in several application fields, such as geomorphology, urban and territorial systems, vegetation restoration, and soil science. The papers include multidisciplinary studies that highlight the usefulness of quantitative analyses of satellite images and UAV-based DEMs, the application of Landscape Evolution Models (LEMs) and automatic landform classification algorithms to solve multidisciplinary issues of landscape changes. A review article is also presented, dealing with the bibliometric analysis of the research topic.

Abstract

Vibration is a natural phenomenon that occurs in a variety of engineering systems. In many circumstances, vibration greatly affects the nature of engineering design as it often dictates limiting factors in the performance of the system. The conventional treatment is to redesign the system or to use passive damping. The former could be a costly exercise, while the latter is only effective at higher frequencies. Active control techniques have emerged as viable technologies to fill this low-frequency gap. This book is concerned with the study of feedback controllers for vibration control of flexi

Abstract

"Traditional methods for handling spatial data are encumbered by the assumption of separate origins for horizontal and vertical measurements, but modern measurement systems operate in a 3-D spatial environment. The 3-D Global Spatial Data Model: Principles and Applications, Second Edition maintains a new model for handling digital spatial data, the global spatial data model or GSDM. The GSDM preserves the integrity of three-dimensional spatial data while also providing additional benefits such as simpler equations, worldwide standardization, and the ability to track spatial data accuracy with greater specificity and convenience. This second edition expands to new topics that satisfy a growing need in the GIS, professional surveyor, machine control, and Big Data communities while continuing to embrace the earth center fixed coordinate system as the fundamental point of origin of one, two, and three-dimensional data sets. Ideal for both beginner and advanced levels, this book also provides guidance and insight on how to link to the data collected and stored in legacy systems."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

This report, a cooperation project between TU and LAF Berlin, documents everyday life and living in container villages and tempohomes in 2018 and presents the residents' perceptions and perspectives, their everyday life and their agency in dealing with everyday challenges. Through architectural ethnographic documentation and interviews, six selected locations were investigated by students of the TU Berlin. The insights gained are summarised in short thematic essays. The LAF introduction places the students' work in the context of the turbulent political and planning challenges of developing and building the sites in contemporary history. It concludes by reflecting on their significance for current and future accommodation strategies from the LAF's perspective.

Abstract

The study of medieval and early modern geographic space, literary cartography, and spatial thinking at a time of rapid digitization in the Humanities offers new ways to investigate spatial knowledge and world perceptions in pre-modern societies. Digitization of cultural heritage collections, open source databases, and interactive resources utilizing a rich variety of source materials-place names, early modern cadastral maps, medieval literature and art, Viking Age and medieval runic inscriptions-provides opportunities to re-think traditional lines of research on spatiality and worldviews, encourage innovation in methodology, and engage critically with digital outcomes. In this book, Nordic scholars of philology, onomastics, history, geography, literary studies, and digital humanities examine multiple aspects of ten large- and small-scale digital spatial infrastructures from the early stages of development to the practical applications of digital tools for studying spatial thinking and knowledge in pre-modern sources and societies.
