This book is a controversial new biography of the apostle Paul that argues for his inclusion in the pantheon of key figures of classical antiquity, along with the likes of Socrates, Alexander the Great, Cleopatra and Augustus. It first provides a critical reassessment of the apostle's life in its historical context that focuses on Paul's discourse of authority, which was both representative of its Roman context and provocative to his rivals within Roman society. It then considers the legend that developed around Paul as the history of his life was elaborated and embellished by later interpreters, creating legends that characterized the apostle variously as a model citizen, an imperial hero, a sexual role model, an object of derision and someone to quote from. It is precisely this rewriting of Paul's history into legend that makes the apostle a key transformative figure of classical antiquity.

Friedrich Nietzsche hat sich als der große Widersacher des Christentums verstanden und seine Kritik im "Antichrist" zu einer polemischen Deutung des Apostels Paulus zugespitzt. Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht den Quellen sowie der Entwicklung des Paulusbildes bei Nietzsche nach und bringt Paulus und Nietzsche in einen beziehungsreichen philosophisch-theologischen Diskurs. Friedrich Nietzsche understood himself to be the great adversary of Christianity. In The Antichrist he escalated his critique into a controversial interpretation of the Apostle Paul. This study shows that a considered examination of Nietzsche's interpretation of Paul is theologically and philosophically fruitful despite (and even because of) its polemics. Nietzsche's interpretation of the Apostle attacks a Christianity that reduces the Gospel to a moral that can be taught. With this contentious interpretation of Paul, which acquires theological aspects as well, Nietzsche creates a form of moral critique that attacks existing "truths" without itself being understandable as "truth". The author inquires into the sources and development of the image of Paul in Nietzsche's thought and brings Paul and Nietzsche into a richly woven philosophical and theological discourse.

This book breaks new ground in New Testament reception history by bringing together early Pauline interpretation and the study of early Christian institutions. Benjamin Edsall traces the close association between Paul and the catechumenate through important texts and readers from the late second century to the fourth century to show how the early Church arrived at a wide-spread image of Paul as the apostle of Christian initiation. While exploring what this image of Paul means for understanding early Christian interpretation, Edsall also examines the significance of this aspect of Pauline reception in relation to interpretive possibilities of Paul's letters. Building on the analysis of early interpretations and rhetorical images of the Apostle, Edsall brings these together with contemporary scholarly discourse. The juxtaposition highlights longstanding continuity and conflict in exegetical discussions and dominant Pauline images. Edsall concludes with broader hermeneutical reflections on the value of historical reception for New Testament Studies.
