Il n'est pas aisé de tourner le dos aux évidences de la négation. L'auteur s'y est astreint, sans y parvenir toujours. « Le non m'excède » (leitmotiv du dernier chapitre) est comme la clef d'un livre où le oui surgit plutôt d'une nostalgie que d'un raisonnement. Ceux qui, éprouvant le vide comme une certitude affective, l'assimilent à une donnée primordiale de la conscience, comment se hausseraient-ils à l'affirmation ? Rien de plus difficile pour eux que de concevoir l'être; inaptes à le saisir par l'esprit, ils s'évertuent à le conquérir par la volonté, en même temps qu'ils poussent la négation jusqu'au point où elle s'annule elle-même. Il existe un savoir mortel à la vie, destructeur par essence, dont ces essais se réclament et se détournent tout ensemble. Autant dire qu'ils se présentent comme une série de perplexités, comme l'illustration d'un tiraillement. Si, entre l'être et le connaître, l'auteur opte en fin de compte pour le premier, c'est qu'il s'est exercé à penser contre soi, contre ses certitudes : tiraillement encore, qu'il a instauré cette fois au plus intime de lui-même. Dans ses conclusions, La tentation d'exister n'est qu'une protestation contre la lucidité, une apologie pathétique du mensonge, un retour à quelques fictions salutaires.

This volume represents the first in-depth English-language study of the French combat novel of the Great War, an immensely popular genre at the time which includes influential texts such as Henri Barbusse's Le Feu and Roland Dorgelès's Les Croix de bois. It explores through these works, and less well-known but equally popular patriotic novels of the period, the effect that experiencing war has upon the writer's understanding of the world, arguing that, in their depiction of conflict, these writers demonstrate a decidedly complex and modernist understanding of humanity's place in the world. In particular, the author examines the French combat novel's evocation of a world where a sense of the Absurd vies with the novelist's desire to re-impose order through a particular political understanding of the Great War itself, be it in the form of revolutionary socialism, French nationalism, or humanism. In this way, this volume contends, ideology becomes a force for responding to and countering the sense of contingency that characterises the human experience of combat. It will be of interest to scholars of twentieth-century French fiction and thought.
