Roberto Esposito is one of the most prolific and important exponents of contemporary Italian political theory. Bíos'-his first book to be translated into English-builds on two decades of highly regarded thought, including his thesis that the modern individual-with all of its civil and political rights as well as its moral powers-is an attempt to attain immunity from the contagion of the extraindividual, namely, the community. In Bíos, 'Esposito applies such a paradigm of immunization to the analysis of the radical transformation of the political into biopolitics. Bíos' discusses the origins and meanings of biopolitical discourse, demonstrates why none of the categories of modern political thought is useful for completely grasping the essence of biopolitics, and reconstructs the negative biopolitical core of Nazism. Esposito suggests that the best contemporary response to the current deadly version of biopolitics is to understand what could make up the elements of a positive biopolitics-a politics of life rather than a politics of mastery and negation of life. In his introduction, Timothy Campbell situates Esposito's arguments within American and European thinking on biopolitics. Roberto Esposito teaches contemporary philosophy at the Italian Institute for the Human Sciences in Naples. Timothy Campbell is associate professor of Italian studies in the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell University and the author of Wireless Writing in the Age of Marconi' (Minnesota, 2006).

Cinquante ans après la parution de l’Histoire de la folie et alors que s’achève la publication des cours au Collège de France, le dialogue des historiens avec Michel Foucault se poursuit. Les textes réunis dans ce volume, abordant des périodes historiques différentes, mettent en avant des expériences individuelles au contact d’un Foucault désacralisé. Dans cette mise à l’épreuve, le passé devient un lieu de problématisation du présent, et l’histoire, une voie qui singularise l’actualité.

Les études rassemblées ici ont pour préoccupation la Recherche et le Développement TechnoScientifique (RDTS) de la biomédecine d’aujourd’hui et de demain. Ce que les technosciences génétiques, les neurotechnosciences, les technosciences de l’information, les nano-technosciences, les technosciences de l’espace, entreprennent n’est pas à la mesure de l’existence humaine individuelle. Comment vivre la brièveté de la vie, c’est-à-dire comment la symboliser, quelle histoire en faire, dès lors qu’elle se détache non plus sur un horizon d’éternité ou d’histoire a priori finalisée, mais sur fond d’aventure, indéterminée et gigantesque? La grande question de l’accompagnement des processus RDTS est la question éthique autant qu’esthétique des formes dont nous voulons encourager la cristallisation et la dynamique temporaires. C’est en ces termes que se posent les questions relatives au clonage, à l’eugénisme, aux formes de vie artificielles, aux transsexuels, aux transgenèses comme aux stations spatiales et aux réseaux informatiques.
