Abstract

Cell mechanics is the field of study that looks at how cells detect, modify, and respond to the physical properties of the cell environment. Cells communicate with each other through chemical and physical signals which are involved in a range of process from embryogenesis and wound healing to pathological conditions such as cancerous invasion. Similar principles are also likely to be critical for success in regenerative medicine. Cell mechanics is thus central to understanding these principles. As cell mechanics draws from the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and mathematics, this book aims not only to provide a collection of research methods, but also to develop a common language among scientists who share the interest in cell mechanics but enter the field with diverse backgrounds. To this end all of the contributing authors have sought to explain in plain language the nature of the biological problems, the rationale for the approaches, in addition to the methods themselves. In addition, to balance practical utility against conceptual advances, the book has intentionally included both chapters that provide detailed recipes and those that emphasize basic principles. * Presents a distinctive emphasis on matrix mechanics and their interplay with cell functions * Includes highly significant topics relevant to basic and translational research, as well as tissue engineering * Emphasizes mechanical input and output of cells

Abstract

The third and final installment of Daniel J. Klionsky's new three-volume treatment of autophagy, this volume focuses on monitoring autophagy with regard to disease connections, and presents methods that can be used to analyze autophagy in clinical samples. Edited by one of the leading authorities in the field, this volume and its companion volumes, Autophagy: Lower Eukaryotes and Autophagy in Mammalian Systems, provide a comprehensive overview of the techniques involved in studying autophagy in eukaryotes and simple animal systems, mammalian cells and non-human animals, and humans. Abstract

This new volume of Methods in Enzymology continues the legacy of this premier serial with quality chapters authored by leaders in the field. Methods to assess mitochondrial function is of great interest to neuroscientists studying chronic forms of neurodegeneration, including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's and other triplet repeat diseases, but also to those working on acute conditions such as stroke and traumatic brain injury. This volume covers research methods on how to assess the life cycle of mitochondria including trafficking, fusion, fission, and degradation. Multiple persp

Abstract

"Very little in our human experience is truly comparable to the immensely crowded and bustling interior of a cell. Biological numeracy provides a new kind of understanding of the cellular world. This book brings together up-to-date quantitative data from the vast biological literature and uses the powerful tool of "back of the envelope" estimates to reveal fresh perspectives and insights from numbers commonly encountered in cell biology. Readers gain a feeling for the sizes, concentrations, energies, and rates that characterize the lives of cells - thereby shedding new light on the microscopic realm."--Publisher's description.

Abstract

The cell wall and its constituent polysaccharides and proteins control nearly all plant-based biological and biophysical processes. Understanding the cell wall is, therefore, not only fundamental to the plant sciences but is also pertinent to aspects of human and animal nutrition and health as well as plant-microbe and plant-animal interactions. In The Plant Cell Wall: Methods and Protocols, experts in the field describe detailed methods which are currently being applied to investigate the many aspects of the plant cell wall including its structure, biochemical composition, and metabolism.  The book delves into a range of techniques involving plant tissue culture, which can be applied to investigating cell wall structure and metabolism, methods directed towards structural analysis and occurrence of carbohydrates, the development and use of microscopy-based tools and techniques, procedures which measure the physical properties of the wall, and methods based on the application of molecular genetic approaches.  Written in the successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.   Authoritative and easily accessible, The Plant Cell Wall: Methods and Protocols seeks to serve both professionals and novices with its well-honed methodologies in an effort to further our knowledge of this essential cellular feature.
