Abstract

Raffaele Pettazzoni (1883–1959), Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Rome and one of the leading historians of religions in the twentieth century, maintained a long correspondence with Herbert Jennings Rose (1883–1961), the gifted Canadian scholar who was Professor of Greek at St Andrews and is best known for his work in the field of ancient religion and folklore. These letters, spanning the years 1927 to 1958, bear witness to the close relationship between the two scholars and focus on two of Pettazzoni’s books, both translated by Rose: Essays on the History of Religions (1954) and The All-Knowing God (1956). They also shed light on Pettazzoni’s initiative to the foundation of the journal NVMEN (1954), and reveal Rose’s brilliant personality.

Abstract

"The editors of What Is Religion? Debating the Academic Study of Religion asked seventeen leading scholars of religion to finish the statement 'Religion is . . .' in a sentence or two, at most a paragraph. Their answer then went to another contributor to write an essay based on it (whether as a reply, a critique, or an application), to which the original author of the paragraph then responded in a brief essay. The result is a collection of scholarly conversations among a wide range of scholars selected to represent the breadth of the current field. To this collection the editors have attached a long appendix, modeled on James Leuba’s 1912 appendix to his Psychological Study of Religion: Its Origin, Function, and Future, that includes over thirty classic or contemporary definitions with their own commentary on them"--Publisher's description.

Abstract

Individuals and groups have long found identity and meaning through religion and its collective expression. In' Religion in World History', John C. Super and Briane K. Turley examine the value of religion for interpreting the human experience in the past and present. Through this they explore those elements of religion that best connect it with cultural and political dynamics that have influenced history. Working within this general framework, Super and Turley bring out three unifying themes: The relationship between formal and informal religious beliefs, how these change through time, and how they are reflected in different cultures The relationship between church and state, from theocracies to the repression of religion The ongoing search for spiritual certainty, and the consequent splintering of core religious beliefs and the development of new ones

Abstract

What is Religion? consists of fourteen essays written by a selection of scholars who represent a wide spectrum of approaches to the acedamic study of religion. Each of the essays is an effort not only to take stock of the present controversy concerning appropriate methodologies for the study of religion, but also to take one giant step beyond that to formulate a precise definition of religion. Given the considerable confusion today about what it is exactly that religious studies scholars take to be their subject matter when they presume to professionally teachabout religion, this volume provides a much needed forum for leading scholars to debate and clarify what professors of religious studies understand as the central object or objects under their scrunity.
