Sur le chemin, ouvert par l'Union européenne, de la conception de bâtiments à consommation énergétique quasi nulle, l'approche passive conduit à l'optimum de compétence énergétique du bâti, tant en construction neuve qu'en rénovation. Et, loin des gadgets technologiques, elle le fait en revsitant les fondamentaux de l'architecture. En Belgique, à Bruxelles en particulier, c'est en dix ans plus d'un million de m2 de bâtiments passifs (maisons, immeubles de logements, bureaux, écoles ou crèches,...) qui sont déjà construits ou rénovés, en chantier ou habités. Dorénavant, des milliers de professionnels du bâtiment, d'occupants ou d'usagers "font du passif", parfois sans le savoir. Son adoption par la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale n'est pas passée inaperçue et inspire d'autres régions d'Europe ou des Etats-Unis, qui souhaitent aussi développer leurs compétences en construction durable et réduire leur dépendance au carbone.

Created for students and professionals to inspire changes in how new buildings are designed and constructed, the Self-Sufficient competition challenged participants to design a self-sufficient and ecologically oriented dwelling. In the early 20th century, the concept of "dwelling" was defined as a "machine for living", a reference to a new way of understanding the construction of inhabitable spaces that characterized the Machine Age. Today, a century later, we face the challenge of constructing a sustainable or self-sufficient dwelling, a living organism that interacts with its environment, exchanging resources, and which functions as an entirely independent entity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has collected a selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing.
