Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive guidance for the use of sound statistical methods and for the evaluation of fatigue data of welded components and structures obtained under constant amplitude loading and used to produce S-N curves. Recommendations for analyzing fatigue data are available, although they do not deal with all the statistical treatments that may be required to utilize fatigue test results, and none of them offers specific guidelines for analyzing fatigue data obtained from tests on welded specimens. For an easy use, working sheets are provided to assist in the proper statistical assessment of experimental fatigue data concerning practical problems giving the procedure and a numerical application as illustration. .

Abstract

This book offers a current state of the art in analysis and modeling of creep phenomena with applications to the structural mechanics. It presents the some presentations from the IUTAM-Symposium series "Creep in Structures", which held in Magdeburg (Germany) in September 2023, and it discusses many advances and new results in the field. These are for example: interlinks of mechanics with materials science in multi-scale analysis of deformation and damage mechanisms over a wide range of stresses and temperature; development and analysis of new alloys for (ultra)high-temperature applications; formulation and calibration of advanced constitutive models of inelastic behavior under transient loading and temperature conditions; development of efficient procedures and machine learning techniques for identification of material parameters in advanced constitutive laws; introduction of gradient-enhanced and non-local theories to account for damage and fracture processes; and application of new experimental methods, such as digital image correlation, for the analysis of inelastic deformation under multi-axial stress state.

Abstract

The use of composites is growing in structural applications in many industries including aerospace, marine, wind turbine and civil engineering. There are uncertainties about the long term performance of these composites and how they will perform under cyclic fatigue loading. Fatigue Life Prediction of Composites and Composite Structures provides a comprehensive review of fatigue damage and fatigue life prediction methodologies for composites and how they can be used in practice. After an introductory chapter, Part one reviews developments in ways of modelling composite fatigue life. The second part of the book reviews developments in predicting composite fatigue life under different conditions including constant and variable amplitude loading as well as multiaxial and cyclic loading. Part three then describes applications such as fatigue life prediction of bonded joints and wind turbine rotor blades as well as health monitoring of composite structures. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, this book will be a standard reference for industry and researchers working with composites and those concerned with the long-term performance and fatigue life of composite components and structures. -- Book Description

Abstract

This book highlights the qualitative and quantitative sequential changes in microstructure of P22 steel under various stress and temperature conditions. The P22 alloy is an established material used under elevated temperature and stress for the components of thermal power plants. Temperature and stress levels for laboratory experimentation have been selected based on the true operating condition of a boiler. This book describes both continuous as well as interrupted tests that were performed under given parameters. Subsequently, the microstructures, bulk hardness and NDE parameters (magnetic and non-linear ultrasonic) have been evaluated. For reliable data, the microstructures have been observed at different regions of creep exposed samples by different characterization techniques. This has been further followed by drawing correlation between specific features like precipitate size variation with creep strain / creep time and so on. Given the contents, this book will be a useful reference for researchers and professionals working in the area of materials especially in thermal power plants.

Abstract

This open access textbook fills a gap, in that it introduces readers to the theory and applications of the Phase-Field technique. Phase Field, over the years, has emerged as a standard tool for materials research, just as the Finite-Element technique has in structure mechanics. Whereas the few existing textbooks on this topic are intended for advanced readers, this one is made accessible to the widest possible audience, through an engaging, lecture format. The content grows out of a course the authors teach for graduate students at Ruhr-University Bochum. Even readers who may, at first, have no clue at all what a “Phase Field” is and for what it is used, are invited on a journey from general physics of thermodynamics and wave mechanics, through applications in all fields of materials science, up to the central questions of physical being. On this journey all the necessary techniques are detailed, mostly formulated in a mathematical language easily understood by engineers and natural scientists.

Abstract

This book highlights the fundamentals and latest progresses in the research and applications of laser shock peening (LSP). As a novel technology for surface treatment, LSP greatly improves the resistance of metallic materials to fatigue and corrosion. The book presents the mechanisms, techniques, and applications of LSP in a systematic way. It discusses a series of new progresses in fatigue performance improvement of metal parts with LSP. It also introduces lasers, equipment, and techniques of newly developed industry LSP, with a detailed description of the novel LSP blisk. The book demonstrates in details numerical analysis and simulation techniques and illustrates process stability control, quality control, and analysis determination techniques. It is a valuable reference for scientists, engineers, and students in the fields of laser science, materials science, astronautics, and aeronautics who seek to understand, develop, and optimize LSP processes.

Abstract

This book presents fused deposition modeling (FDM) which is an additive manufacturing (AM) process to fabricate 3D parts from a build-up of 2D layers. The chapters present an experimental analysis of fatigue characteristics of FDM-processed PLA samples. The results indicate that the concentric build orientation provides highest cycles of fatigue, ultimate strength, and impact energy. The effect of layer orientation on the fatigue behavior of 3D-printed PLA samples is investigated in this case study.
