Abstract

The 'New Judas' is a new account of the life of Nestorius (ca. 386 to 451 CE), the Christological controversy that engulfed him, as well as the critical imperial interventions into ecclesiastical politics during the period from the First Council of Ephesus to the Council of Chalcedon. This work endeavours to use both Nestorius' own 'Liber Heraclidis', preserved only in Syriac, as well as the unprecedented abundance of primary documents in Greek and Latin from 'Acta Conciliorum Oecumenicorum', to answer a question of fundamental historical importance: How could the teaching of Christ's two natures, one so closely identified with Nestorius, deposed in 431, be vindicated in all its essentials at the Council of Chalcedon in twenty years later? The answer requires not only a reconsideration of the role of the supposedly timid emperor Theodosius II, but also a new understanding of the evolving position of Nestorius' chief opponent, Cyril of Alexandria.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

For over four centuries the principal source of Christian European knowledge of Islam stemmed from a project sponsored by Peter the Venerable, ninth abbot of Cluny, in 1142. This consisted of Latin translations of five Arabic works, including the first translation of the Koran in a western language. Known as the Toledan Collection, it was eventually printed in 1543 with an introduction by Martin Luther. The abbot also completed a handbook of Islam beliefs and a major analytical and polemical work, Liber contra sectam Saracenorum; annotated editions of these texts are included in this book. Originally published in 1964.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Abstract

"The First Council of Ephesus (431) was the climax of the so-called Nestorian Controversy. Convoked by the emperor Theodosius II to restore peace to the church, it immediately divided into two rival councils, both meeting at Ephesus. The emperor's representatives attempted to get the bishops on both sides to meet together had no success, and after four months the council was dissolved without having ever properly met. But a number of decrees by the larger of the two rival councils, in particular the condemnation of Nestorius of Constantinople, were subsequently accepted as the valid decrees of the 'ecumenical council of Ephesus'. The documentation, consisting of conciliar proceedings, letters and other documents, provides information not only about events in Ephesus itself, but also about lobbying and public demonstrations in Constantinople. There is no episode in late Roman history where we are so well informed about how politics were conducted in the imperial capital. This makes the Acts a document of first importance for the history of the Later Roman Empire as well for that of the church." --
