Abstract

"This book presents the issue of radioactive waste management from the perspective of the German legal system, analysing how lawmakers have responded to the problem of nuclear waste over the course of the last seventy years. In this book, Robert Rybski unwraps and explains the legal and social issues related to radioactive waste. He takes readers through the entire 'life-cycle': from the moment that radioactive material is classified as radioactive waste, through to the period of interim storage, and right up to its final disposal. However, this last step in radioactive waste management (that of final disposal) has not yet been achieved in Germany, or anywhere in the world, and has been the subject of hefty public debate for dozens of years. As a result, the book analyses the most recent regulations in place to enable final disposal"-- Provided by the publisher.

Abstract

Environmental challenges have never been greater than today. There is the need for the utmost accuracy in the efforts to track the use, manufacture, processing, treatment, and disposal of toxic and hazardous materials. Legislation passed over the last twenty years has not only resulted in improved environmental quality, but has also created new levels of accountability for today's environmental professional. This book helps companies meet the ever-growing number of recordkeeping, reporting, and information-management demands. It assists the practicing professional who must keep facility records relating to the generation and managemnet of solid and hazardous waste. Specific guidance is given on the principles of waste material tracking by point of generation and fully loaded waste management cost accounting. Some benefits to tracking by point of generation are:

Abstract

National radioactive waste management programmes are in various phases of siting facilities and rely on distinct technical approaches for different categories of waste. In all cases, it is necessary for institutional actors and the potential or actual host community to build a meaningful, workable relationship. Partnership approaches are effective in achieving a balance between the requirements of fair representation and competent participation. With host community support, they also help ensure the desirable combination of a licensable site and management concept as well as a balance between compensation, local control and development opportunities. This report provides up-to-date information on experience with local partnership arrangements in 13 countries. The characteristics, advantages and aims of community partnerships are also described in addition to the concept's evolution over the past decade.
