Abstract

In Zimbabwe, trade has been a driver of economic growth, rising incomes, and progressive empowerment of Zimbabweans through rising standards of living and the promise of better jobs. Since 1980, through good years and bad years, increases in exports have been positively associated with increases in national income. Zimbabwe's location and resource base, together with a low-cost but relatively well educated labor force, have endowed it with a naturally high trade ratio built on a diversified base that facilitates using trade as an engine of growth. While trade volumes have rebounded smartly fro

Abstract

This contributed volume presents a collection of empirical studies examining how the COVID-19 pandemic interacted with and impacted Zimbabwe’s health sector. Zimbabwe was hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with a case fatality ratio that fluctuated but reached as high as 9.90% in late June, 2021. COVID-19 exposed and highlighted a plethora of structural weaknesses in the country, including an incapacitated health management system. The studies presented in the book show that the pandemic disrupted the preventative, curative and rehabilitative services within Zimbabwe’s health sector. This has impacted and will likely continue to impact population health outcomes and further exacerbate the issues that previously existed in a very fragile healthcare system that was struggling to cope with its disease burden even before the pandemic. The book contributes to an emerging literature profiling how health systems manage (or fail to manage) global pandemics. It aims to be a distinctive source of information toward the implementation of practical solutions to problems associated with COVID-19. The volume takes a multidisciplinary approach toward practical, policy-oriented strategies to tackle the pandemic and confront our “new normal.” The studies presented here will be useful to anyone interested in the mitigation, containment and ultimately preemption of the emergence of future pandemics.

Abstract

The 'Rhodesian crisis' of the 1960s and 1970s, and the early 1980s crisis of independent Zimbabwe, can be understood against the background of Cold War historical transformations brought on by, among other things, African decolonization in the 1960s; the failure of American power in Vietnam and the rise of Third World political power at the UN and elsewhere. In this African history of the diplomacy of decolonization in Zimbabwe, Timothy Lewis Scarnecchia examines the relationship and rivalry between Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe over many years of diplomacy, and how both leaders took advantage of Cold War racialized thinking about what Zimbabwe should be, including Anglo-American preoccupations with keeping whites from leaving after Independence.

Abstract

“Trust Matsilele’s Social Media and Digital Dissidence in Zimbabwe offers a highly recommended, complex and original genealogy of dissidence, situating it in the longue durée of representations of dissidence – ranging from folklore to political discourse. For Matsilele, dissidence is principally about restoring hunhu or humanity. Moving beyond the technological determinism of naïve celebrations of social media’s onslaught on the postcolonial state, this book provides a nuanced and deeply contextualized account of how social media shapes and is shaped by histories of dissidence.” — Wendy Willems, Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK This book proposes a new theorisation when studying cyber dissidents in an African digital sphere. It argues that social media dissidents are a recent development in a long lineage of dissidents in African societies. Using Zimbabwe as a case study, the study locates contemporary dissidents in the same family with other historical dissident figures found in African orature, the Chimurenga wars, through music, poetry and other forms of expression. The book argues against techno-deterministic approaches to studying social media-born digital dissidence in Africa. It is aimed at scholars dedicated to studying social media movements in African contexts and the global south generally, prompting them to re-evaluate their earlier conclusions and adopt a more nuanced and contextspecific approach. Dr Trust Matsilele is Senior Lecturer in the Media and Public Relations department at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa, and a fellow of CPUT’s Centre for Communication Studies. He has published extensively in peer reviewed edited books and journals. His research cuts across disciplines such as social media, protest cultures, journalism and education. He is also a former senior journalist with Forbes Africa magazine and CNBC Africa and is regularly featured as a political analyst and social commentator in the media.

Abstract

Making use of archival documents, period newspapers, and oral interviews, 'African Police and Soldiers in Colonial Zimbabwe, 1923-80' examines the ambiguous experience of black security personnel, police, and soldiers in white-ruled Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) from 1923 through independence and majority rule in 1980. Across the continent, European colonial rule could not have been maintained without African participation in the police and army. In Southern Rhodesia, lack of white manpower meant that despite fear of mutiny, blacks played an increasingly prominent role in law enforcement and military operations and from World War II constituted a strong majority within the regular security forces. Despite danger, Africans volunteered for the police and army during colonial rule for a variety of reasons, including the prestige of wearing a uniform, the possibility of excitement, family traditions, material considerations, and patriotism. As black police and soldiers were called upon to perform more specialized tasks, they acquired greater education and some - particularly African police - became part of the emerging westernized African middle class. After retirement, career African police and soldiers often continued to work in the security field, some becoming prominent entrepreneurs or commercial farmers, and generally composed a conservative, loyalist element in African society that the government eventually mobilized to counter the growth of African nationalism. Tim Stapleton here mines rich archival sources to clarify the complicated dynamic and legacy of black military personal who served during colonial rule in present-day Zimbabwe. Timothy Stapleton is Professor of history at Trent University in Ontario.

Abstract

"The Nature of Whiteness explores the intertwining of race and nature in postindependence Zimbabwe. Nature and environment have played prominent roles in white Zimbabwean identity, and when the political tide turned against white farmers after independence, nature was the most powerful resource they had at their disposal. In the 1970s, "Mlilo," a private conservancy sharing boundaries with Hwange National Park, became the first site in Zimbabwe to experiment with "wildlife production," and by the 1990s, wildlife tourism had become one of the most lucrative industries in the country. Mlilo attained international notoriety in 2015 as the place where Cecil the Lion was killed by a trophy hunter. Yuka Suzuki provides a balanced study of whiteness, the conservation of nature, and contested belonging in twenty-first-century southern Africa. The Nature of Whiteness is a fascinating account of human-animal relations and the interplay among categories of race and nature in this embattled landscape." -- Publisher's description
