Abstract

Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park in Germany, the Plateau de Kirchberg in Luxembourg, Parco Dora in Turin, Italy and numerous other projects designed and built by Peter Latz and Partners stand as examples of an up-to-date and intelligent approach to alternative environmental technologies and the reclamation of extensive industrial landscapes. In Peter Latz's landscape architecture, ecological and social concerns are translated into an individual aesthetic language that aims to achieve a timeless quality. The different layers and meanings of the sites rich in history are revealed and woven into networks of spatial and temporal relationships that follow rules of their own - the syntax of landscape. A sense of process and dynamism in sustainable landscape structures characterises the works, works that are open for change: they are spaces in development, not parks as finite set pieces.Peter Latz is professor emeritus of the Technische Universität München and has held guest professorships at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. Udo Weilacher is professor for Landscape Architecture and Industrial Landscape at the Technische Universität München.

Abstract

In this provocative intellectual biography, architectural historian Mark Wigley makes the surprising claim that the thinking behind modernist architect Konrad Wachsmann’s legendary projects was dominated by the idea of television. While architecture is typically embarrassed by television, preferring to act as if it never happened, Wachsmann fully embraced it. Investigating the archives of one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century, Wigley scrutinizes Wachsmann’s design, research, and teaching, closely reading a succession of unseen drawings, models, photographs, correspondence, publications, syllabi, reports, and manuscripts to argue that Wachsmann is an anti-architect—a student of some of the most influential designers of the 1920s that dedicated thirty-five post–Second World War years to the disappearance of architecture.Wachsmann turned architecture against itself. His hypnotic projects for a new kind of space were organized around the thought that television liberates a different way of living together. Wachsmann dissolved buildings into pulsating mirages that were a huge influence on the experimental avant-gardes of the 1960s and 1970s. But Konrad Wachsmann’s Television: Post-architectural Transmissions demonstrates that this work was even more extreme than the experiments it inspired. The book offers a forensic analysis of a career to show that Wachsmann developed one of the most compelling manifestos of what architecture would need to become in the age of ubiquitous electronics.

Abstract

This book provides an overview of the work of Ernst May, one of the outstanding figures of classic modernist architecture. Exhibition Itinerary: Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, July 27-November 13, 2011. This catalog accompanies the first exhibition dedicated to the entirety of May's work. It provides an overview of his most famous achievement, The New Frankfurt--a massive urban planning project which in the 1920s gave the city an unprecedented Modernist look and which provided thousands of ingeniously and economically designed apartments. In addition, the book presents in detail Ernst May's other architectural projects. It focuses on May's time in Silesia, the Soviet Union and Africa as well as his post-war return to Germany. It also sheds light on May's enormous impact on the fields of architecture and urban planning. The book's hundreds of illustrations include contemporary photographs, original drawings and plans, and images of models and completed projects. More than a dozen essays examine various aspects of May's work and life, and discuss the full range of his architectural oeuvre, presented in a comprehensive catalogue raisonné

Abstract

Increasingly vital to contemporary design, 'green" or ecological thinking was already anticipated by German modernists in the early twentieth century. At the center of this drive towards an ecological modernism was landscape architect Leberecht Migge 1881-1935). Migge brilliantly synthesized ideas from across fields such as organic gardening, architecture, and biological theory to create pioneering projects throughout central Europe. He applied "biotechnic" principles to integrally link dwelling and garden, recycling household waste to grow foodstuffs through the use of innovative infrastructure and open space planning. In collaboration with prominent modernist architects, including Martin Elsaesser, Ernst May, Bruno Taut, and Martin Wagner, he produced some of the most notable works of the period, the mass housing settlements, or Grobsiedlungen, of Frankfurt Main and Berlin. Migge was also a talented garden and park designer, combining green and architectural elements through his "garden-architectonic." Haney's study fully documents Migge's life and work for the first time, challenging conventional assumptions about modernism and ecological design history. --Book Jacket.
