Cet ouvrage a été élaboré à partir du rapport scientifique d'une recherche financée par le GIP - Mission de recherche droit et justice. Un colloque a marqué la dernière étape de cette recherche, le 14 mai 1998. L'aveu recouvre trois significations : la reconnaissance d'une faute accompagnée d'une éventuelle sanction, la confession catholique suivie du pardon, la capitulation d'un accusé face à l'autorité. Si l'histoire permet de reconstituer les glissements successifs de sens, la sociologie observe que, dans les contextes actuels de l'aveu, ces significations sont souvent enchevêtrées. Cette polysémie fait de l'aveu un phénomène complexe, intéressant les chercheurs en sciences humaines et les praticiens confrontés à ses ambiguïtés.
