"Lorsque l'on écoute les gens du monde parler du christianisme, on constate à quel point chaque terme, chaque dogme, est objet de malentendu. Cela s'explique tout simplement parce que le christianisme est mal enseigné ou même n'est plus enseigné du tout. Il en résulte l'idée générale, et fausse, (premier malentendu) que, d'ailleurs, il n'y a rien à apprendre. Le christianisme se réduit alors à un vague sentiment philanthropique. Ces malentendus qui règnent aujourd'hui dans la conscience collective sont, en fait, de très anciennes hérésies, qui poursuivent ainsi leur existence comme ces bactéries datant d'un milliard d'années et qui continuent à pulluler. Les bactéries, c'est de l'information. Les hérésies, c'est de l'information. On appelle hérésie une doctrine ou une théorie qui n'est pas conforme au message initial inscrit dans la sainte Bibliothèque hébraïque et dans les livres de la Nouvelle Alliance. Ce livre aborde quatre malentendus principaux : la conception irrationnelle de la foi, le problème de la trinité, le problème de l'incarnation, la conception gnostique de la chute originelle. Lorsqu'on a accumulé tous ces contresens et tous ces malentendus, le christianisme devient, bien entendu inintelligible. Alors on ajoute un contresens de plus, en parlant, avec quelque délectation aussi, du mystère. Si, dans la langue française d'aujourd'hui, le mot mystère signifie généralement ce à quoi on ne comprend plus rien, dans le langage des Livres de la Nouvelle Alliance, les musteria étaient, au contraire, les secrets intelligibles proposés à l'intelligence humaine pour être son pain. A l'évidence, pour ceux qui sont supposés professer la doctrine chrétienne, cette accumulation de contresens est très malsaine et, à la longue invivable. Pour ceux qui sont dehors, l'effet est également désastreux et répulsif. Le christianisme est tout d'abord une Pensée. C'est même la Pensée créatrice de Dieu. Il importe de découvrir son contenu." Set against the backdrop of the rise of right-wing Christian nationalism in Eastern Europe, this book declares that Catholic theologians ought to be understood and studied as intellectuals: socially and historically situated creators of national cultural traditions. While the Romanian government funds thriving schools for the countrys Hungarian minority, NGOs founded by Transylvanian Hungarians continue to organize volunteers to supplement this formal pedagogy. These volunteers understand themselves to be reviving a national tradition of "serving the people" by educating the regions rural Hungarian populace. While this book is about the challenges Catholic educators face in teaching villagers, it is just as much about their new effort to call groups of volunteers from across the border in Hungary to teach alongside them. In these encounters, Transylvanian Hungarian educators remake their intellectual tradition, especially ideas about the basis of pedagogical authority, the ethical character of the nation, and the social location of selfhood. When contemporary Catholic intellectuals urge teachers to manifest their national self-consciousness, they carry with them the assumption that selfhood emerges where humans collaborate with God. While Transylvanian Hungarian intellectuals are enmeshed in constant competition, by focusing on contemporary theologians New Magyar Apostles unmasks the struggle over the nature of divine presence that animates this revival of a Christian national tradition of intellectual service.
