Australia has been seen as a land of both punishment and refuge. Australian literature has explored these controlling alternatives, and vividly rendered the landscape on which they transpire. Twentieth-century writers left Australia to see the world; now Australia's distance no longer provides sanctuary. But today the global perspective has arrived with a vengeance. In Contemporary Australian Literature: A World Not Yet Dead, Nicholas Birns tells the story of how novelists, poets and critics, from Patrick White to Hannah Kent, from Alexis Wright to Christos Tsiolkas, responded to this condition. With rancour, concern and idealism, modern Australian literature conveys a tragic sense of the past yet an abiding vision of the way forward. Many writers today could say: my French does not have a childhood. Exploring contemporary autobiographical texts deemed significant, this essay proposes a mapping of translingual poetics and shows what the practice of a foreign language does to self-writing. Is it because our era, made up of stories of exile and change of language, is looking for bards that some of these authors have been pushed to the front of the literary scene? At a time when literature is being considered on a world scale and people are wondering about the place of French and the idea of {u200B}{u200B}the national, let us see what is happening in the central but still unexplored corpus of their Memoirs of Beyond Language.
