Taal is alomtegenwoordig in de constructie van historische waarheid: in de meeste bronnen die historici gebruiken, in de teksten die ze zelf op basis van die bronnen schrijven, in het gesprek dat ze erover aangaan met hun collega’s en met de maatschappij. Dit boek biedt niet alleen een grondige theoretische reflectie op dat uitgangspunt, maar staat ook uitvoerig stil bij de concrete implicaties ervan voor de geschiedschrijving. Het eerste deel bevat een uitgewerkt stappenplan voor een historische discoursanalyse, in het tweede deel wordt stilgestaan bij de keuzes die historici maken – en beter niet maken – wanneer ze de veranderlijke en ongrijpbare historische realiteit tot een tekst trachten te stollen. In elk deel versterken theoretische inzichten en praktische voorbeelden elkaar wederzijds. De lezer wordt ook uitgenodigd om zelf aan de slag te gaan met concrete oefeningen. Doordat theorie en praktijk voortdurend met elkaar in dialoog gaan, is dit boek zowel van belang voor wie aan geschiedschrijving wil doen, als voor wie reflecteert over de fundamenten van het vak.

Historici willen antwoorden vinden op vragen over mens en maatschappij in het verleden. Tijdens hun onderzoek moeten ze evenwel een aantal spelregels volgen. Eerst zoeken ze naar getuigenissen uit eerste hand, of dat nu teksten, interviews, beelden of artefacten zijn. Na de kritische doorlichting van dit bronnenmateriaal vergelijken ze hun bevindingen met resultaten van anderen. Ten slotte analyseren ze de historische context in een boeiend geschreven onderzoeksverslag. Daardoor zijn geschiedkundigen voortreffelijke vorsers, verhalenvertellers en schrijvers. It is well known that medieval Europe owes most of its scientific learning to the translations of Arabic treatises made in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The earliest Arabic infiltrations in Latin science are however much older. They can be traced back to the tenth century and to the making, in Catalonia, of a large corpus of astrological treatises: the Alchandreana . Based mainly on Arabic sources, but also on Hebrew and Latin sources, the Alchandreana constitute an exceptional testimony of cross-cultural exchanges between Christian, Arabic and Jewish scholars before the turn of the first millenium. Public History: A Textbook of Practice is a guide to the many challenges historians face while teaching, learning, and practicing public history. Historians can play a dynamic and essential role in contributing to public understanding of the past, and those who work in historic preservation, in museums and archives, in government agencies, as consultants, as oral historians, or who manage crowdsourcing projects need very specific skills.
