Taal is alomtegenwoordig in de constructie van historische waarheid: in de meeste bronnen die historici gebruiken, in de teksten die ze zelf op basis van die bronnen schrijven, in het gesprek dat ze erover aangaan met hun collega’s en met de maatschappij. Dit boek biedt niet alleen een grondige theoretische reflectie op dat uitgangspunt, maar staat ook uitvoerig stil bij de concrete implicaties ervan voor de geschiedschrijving. Het eerste deel bevat een uitgewerkt stappenplan voor een historische discoursanalyse, in het tweede deel wordt stilgestaan bij de keuzes die historici maken – en beter niet maken – wanneer ze de veranderlijke en ongrijpbare historische realiteit tot een tekst trachten te stollen. It is well known that medieval Europe owes most of its scientific learning to the translations of Arabic treatises made in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The earliest Arabic infiltrations in Latin science are however much older. They can be traced back to the tenth century and to the making, in Catalonia, of a large corpus of astrological treatises: the Alchandreana . Based mainly on Arabic sources, but also on Hebrew and Latin sources, the Alchandreana constitute an exceptional testimony of cross-cultural exchanges between Christian, Arabic and Jewish scholars before the turn of the first millenium. This book is at once a thorough study of the educational system for the Greeks of Hellenistic and Roman Egypt, and a window to the vast panorama of educational practices in the Greco-Roman world. It describes how people learned, taught, and practiced literate skills, how schools functioned, and what the curriculum comprised. Raffaella Cribiore draws on over 400 papyri, ostraca (sherds of pottery or slices of limestone), and tablets that feature everything from exercises involving letters of the alphabet through rhetorical compositions that represented the work of advanced students. The exceptional wealth of surviving source material renders Egypt an ideal space of reference. The book makes excursions beyond Egypt as well, particularly in the Greek East, by examining the letters of the Antiochene Libanius that are concerned with education.
