Cette anthologie rassemble près de quatre-vingts textes espacés sur une période qui débute avec les années soixante et se termine au milieu des années quatre-vingt-dix. Document de référence pour une histoire des idées architecturales et urbaines, ce livre permet d'avoir directement accès à une série de textes qui sont souvent cités de manière trop allusive et dont beaucoup n'étaient pas encore traduits. Il prolonge en outre l'ouvrage d'Ulrich Conrads, Programmes et Manifestes de l'architecture du XXè siècle, dont Michel Denès avait préfacé, en 1991, la première édition française. Seul un tiers des textes parle strictement de la ville; mais les villes ne sont-elles pas bâties tout autant de maisons, que d'idées ? Chacun des textes est présenté par une brève note introductive et le choix de ceux-ci, bien qu'il se veuille acritique, peut sembler parfois plus polémique que strictement scientifique, et s'il respecte les canons de la discipline, il réserve cependant surprises et découvertes.
